Champagne! Park Royal Asda

We have a significant event approaching in our family as well as Christmas. A friend advised me to check out the prices of champagne when I was up at Park Royal getting petrol. When I popped into the ASDA, which is a gloomy experience at the best of times, I was made even more miserable to find out how much I had been overpaying for champagne previously. I am no bon-viveur who regularly orders a case of the stuff but even to buy a single bottle it is worth the trip.

'Escellent news'Have you been at the bubbly already ML?Asda a ‘gloomy experience’? Unless you’re prepared to pay for the ambience of Waitrose or M&S, it’s no worse than any other supermarket, and the parking is usually better. The petrol is cheap as well.

Some very good bargains there. I often have a delivery of heavy stuff from Asda, cleaning materials, tins, bags of rice etc. Usually cheaper than other stores. I never buy their bread though.As for being at the champers.on a Monday morning Mr. Barchuk for shame! You will be calling me a champagne socialist next.

The other good option at this time of year is the Waitrose Prosecco - generally reduced by at least a third. Last year in November/December, we saw the manager loading up his own boot - ready for his wedding the following summer. that cheap!

Champagne for Christmas is great, but we can't afford even good 'offers'. I like Sara's idea of going for a reasonable prosecco - tastes almost as good as a Moet, Krug or Bollie - or even a sparling Loire Valley on offer at say Tesco's or Waitrose - why pay nearly £20 whena decent prosecco on offer might by say £6 or so? Cheers!

I paid £15.99 for a brand I have seen priced at £30.99 in wine merchants. The very cheapest bottle was £12.00 I think.

I pay about that - or a little more - for my favourite champagne: Ariston Fils Brut. But then I have to drive to Brouillet near Rheims to buy it, which sort of blows the budget.Mike Taylor of Park & Bridge says we should be buying all our wine/champagne etc from a local trader instead and it's treasonous to discuss cheap supermarket purchases on a forum like this when we should be supporting local independent retail instead. Is he right?

I didn't say it's treasonous Sara. But if you've followed how the supermarkets are able to offer these prices (see the Tesco saga as an example...) and if you really want Acton to offer more than just take aways and betting shops, it's worth pledging your ongoing support to local shops. I appreciate that Champagne and Prosecco aren't that high up on Maslow's hierarchy of needs but its always nice to enjoy a treat - which is why we stock a great champagne mimi-me for under £16 (champagne grapes, champagne method, but made in Patagonia and really delicious) with discounts if you buy 6 or 12. The same discounts we offer on all our wines, all year round in Churchfield Road. We're also investing a lot of money in opening the bar at 74 - and we've used local trades throughout (plumbers, electricians, painters, builders, kitchen supply and fitters) and bought equipment n Churchfield Road - even when we could have saved a lot of cash buying online or elsewhere. I am huge - and vocal - believer in shopping local and am always happy to put my money where my mouth is. Oh, and we have some bottles free beer tonight if anyone wants to swing by and pick them up!

I'm all for supporting local businesses but your markups are very high. Happy to pay a small premium for the convenience and to support independents but once the saving becomes £20 plus if I make the short drive up to Park Royal that's what's going to happen. That's not even taking into account to that the lack of issues with parking and the cheap petrol.

I think we have two sides to this story. On the one we have the giant foreign owned supermarkets who have dubious customer service and little connection to the area, but can sell booze cheaply and offer lots of minimum wage jobs. On the other, little locally owned businesses with carefully chosen stock,  whose buying power cannot compete with the multinationals. Why not have the best of both worlds? If everyone registered on this Forum spent £10.00 four times a year in the local shops, the shops would flourish, and we could still hunt for bargains at the supermarket. Go on, support your local shop some of the time!

I entirely agree that it is important to support local businesses and use them in favour of their larger competition as much as possible. I'm happy to pay a premium to do this but there are limits.

Exactly so! I support/ buy from/eat or drink at between 12 & 15 businesses in Churchfield Road (more when the wine bar opens)But there is still a role in my life for John Lewis/Cote/Morrisons (best grapes around)/Waitrose.
