If that inarticulate comment was  directed at me Diane, not that I could care less, I am a ex lifelong Labour supporter who is extremely disillusioned  by the conceited 'let them eat cake'attitude, as evidenced (amongst many other examples) by Bell's tenancy of social housing whilst being a property owner. No doubt he would expect the rest of us to stick to the rules and the spirit of the law.After all what is public housing for except to meet the needs of the less privileged, for want of a better word. Labour have lost their way and are now trying to  regain a position that is lost forever imo, and have no coherent plan on how to manage capitalism, because like it or not, capitalism has won the debate. I am not a Tory at heart but an independent, which I am sure many now feel after the last 20 years or so.

Also our Falkland Islands would be handed over to the Argies and although i'm not a monarchist, the abolition of the royals would take a huge chunk out of the tourist trade. Basically this was jobs for the old Labour boys and he has disappointed me greatly, although I suspected this was the case and wanted Yvette Cooper in position.  Unfortunately this is the same with the trades unions which are unrepresented by women at the top, despite overwhelming numbers of female members, and thus "old" labour really do have a problem with women.  Corbyn has failed to appoint any women to top positions in cabinet, the Parliamentary Labour party has men as leader and deputy leader and there's a male candidate for Mayor. It doesn't seem like any progress is being made on gender equality (and don't even start on race).  I'm off to Scotland.....

According to a friend who works for the BBC the issue is explosive within the Labour party - perhaps there is some exaggeration from his political opponents but all the key cabinet positions have gone to white males.His attempt to gloss over this by pre-announcing that over half the shadow cabinet will be female is extraordinarily ill-judged as any woman appointed to the cabinet from now on will have the stigma of possibly only getting the job to meet a quota. That the appointments have not been made yet could mean that some of the female candidates have realised this and told him to get stuffed.

"Huge criticism" is rather an exaggeration. He has said he will have 50/50 split and hasn't yet announced all the positions, so lets just wait and see.

As I write Jeremy Corbyn is attracting huge criticism for having a shadow cabinet in which the top 5 jobs are held by men. He has only filled 12 positions so far with negotiations with incumbents or potential replacements taking longer than expected. Rupa Huq must have been disappointed not to have got Health Secretary as Heidi Alexander's sole qualification for the job seems to have been that she supported NHS closures in her constituency.She still has a good chance of getting a job as Corbyn now has no choice but to end up with a female majority in his cabinet. It looks like he might need to create some bogus positions like Minister for Minority Faiths to do this but if she wants to be a minister I suspect all she has to do is ask.

When I bumped into her at Ealing Broadway station a while ago, I asked her if she would be nominating Jeremy and she said she would - because she thought it was good to have the debate within the party, not because she supported his policies. I bet she's kicking herself now :)

In May 2015, Huq won the Ealing Central and Acton seat with 22,002 votes, previously held by Angie Bray who received 21,728 votes, with a turnout of 71.4%. In June of the same year, Huq was one of 36 Labour MPs to nominate Jeremy Corbyn as a candidate in the Labour leadership election, although she now supports Yvette Cooper for leader.She also supports save The Indian Elephant. I might have got this wrong so feel free to correct. I understand that Rupa was one of the MP's who nominated Jeremy Corbyn. She went on to announce her support for Yvette Cooper. Not sure where that leaves her but I would think her local support (always marginal) would dwindle if she were to declare herself a Corbyn supporter now. Interesting times indeed.

What we don't know at this stage is whether or not Rupa Huq is a Machiavellian genius for nominating Corbyn for leader or a 'moron' as another Labour MP described the nominators.Certainly a shadow cabinet position is hers if she wants it. Corbyn has already announced that half his shadow cabinet will be female and a significant number of senior female MPs have already said they wouldn't serve or obviously won't because of their Blairite tendencies. There are only 99 out of which 13 need to be found to sign up to a Corbynite platform of policies.Nominating Corbyn problem makes Rupa Huq fireproof against the inevitable wave of reselection of MPs that will result. The worrying thing for the parliamentary Labour Party is that Corbyn didn't just win but he won with the majority of registered party members. This means he can probably do away with any MP he chooses to.If you are of the cynical frame of mind that believes MPs are just in it for the money remember that a sitting MP's severance arrangements are much more favourable if they contest and lose their seat than if they are deselected. This means that right now a significant number of Labour MPs are making a choice between forming a new party and joining the Liberal Democrats.Can't see that much change locally however, Steven Pound and Virendra Sharma have local support bases that make them untouchable (and for those believing that Julian Bell is vulnerable remember his close association with Sharma. He is safe). Andy Slaughter is Blairite but sound on Israel so probably okay. Not sure about Ruth Cadbury but the polling suggest the Conservatives will retake that seat anyway next time around so the Corbynites will probably leave her alone.

Chris,I don't see how years of ineffective opposition and fractured support from mp's will constitute 'exciting times'. As for the 'At last we have a decent, honest principled person'... we all thought that about Blair at the time. It also implies that you think up until now the leaders and the leadership candidates have not lived up to that description.I'll give Jezza a year or 18 months before he is ousted.
