The last time I asked Julian Bell what was happening with the Passmore Edwards Library site he told me there was a hitch. I had previously asked him if there was a covenant on the building and he said no. I am wondering if having looked at the legal documents, the council or Cuzon Cinema's lawyers have found there is in fact a covenant restricting use of the building.Passmore Edwards was very generous and I don't suppose he would have handed over so many buildings without stipulating what they could be used for. The Shepherd's Bush library was another given by him and the Bush Theatre acquired in on the understanding that they had to have a library there. They set up a library of play scripts, which is very appropriate. Curzon could set up a library for works about film, appropriate for LB of Ealing I think, but I wonder if this is not something they feel able to do.

Good point Tatiana. Are there any spaces above shops on the High Street which might be used? Someone must know a suitable temporary (or even permanent) venue to get the Arts Centre going...

Surely, the Arts Centre concept was not based purely on the acquisition of the library building?...The idea itself is beautiful, of course. Norwich Arts Centre was housed in several shabby places before it proved itself, and now it is a roaring success.

The Council's representatives confirmed to Mill Hill Park residents at our AGM that the contracts were due to compete and the cinema would be open to the public by the end of 2016. Great news!

All I can say is the reason we were told it wasn't us is that 'we didn't have the money' - which we would have done had they said the building was ours (the funders were lining up). There'd have been a theatre, music/dance venue, education spaces and bars/restaurant plus community-friendly programming in addition to 3 cinema screens if they'd gone with us. And, we'd have started work by now, too, because we're not the only ones desperate for some arts facilities in W3. Every time I walk by the building, it pains my heart that they made the wrong decision. A very sad state of affairs indeed.

I was told by Curzon cinemas that they expected to sign the agreement last spring - since then absolutely nothing.

Back in the Spring, I know that Glynne Steele, the brain behind the old Library Arts Centre wrote to the Council to ask for an explanation. You see he was told that the reason for turning down his otherwise excellent proposal was that Curzon were tried nd tested and would progress the regeneration very quickly.He did get a response and was told that the Agreement was ready to be signed then.

I regularly tweet the council, Julian Bell and Curzon on this -not once have I had the courtesy of a reply.And the council is being beastly smug about its compulsory purchase of a cinema in Ealing...

I have looked for information on this and cannot find anything unfortunately. I do hope this is still going ahead...especially as the Arts Centre proposal was turned down in favour of it
