Neighbourhood

Just mulling over the idea of what a neighbourhood is.  How would you define it?  What is it?  Versions of definition I've found range from "a district or community within a town or city" and "the area surrounding a particular place, person, or object" but what does it mean to individuals, how would we know we were in "the neighbourhood", what defines it?  For example, am I in the neighbourhood of London, as I'm in the surrounding area?

I agree, Sara - I think the definition is small and very local, perhaps somewhere you can walk to the shops from, the GP, primary school, the park, the station.

The recycling banks in the street are called/listed as neighbourhood recycling banks - when you can find them.  We've discovered that the Council website doesn't list all the Council ones so it is worth doing your own research!  Well that is unless they are called On-The-Go banks...  which give the impression that they move around and you have to catch them.

I always think of a neighbourhood as quite small. Definitely London is too big. Even Acton Central might be.Depends how you use it: a neighbourhood resource might be a smaller patch than "I'll bring it when I'm n the neighbourhood" Bigger than a street though (probably)
