Underfloor heating, worth the hassle?

Has anyone had underfloor heating fitted with good solid results, enough to say that when it is freezing in winter they haven't missed they tried and tested radiators?Going for full refurbishment of my house and it's one of the key things I need to consider as it affects flooring choices, furniture layout, kitchen setup etc.

We have had it for just over a year - it was fitted as part of a whole house refurb.  We have water based system in most rooms and electric in the bathrooms - no idea about brand - the water based just looks like white plastic tubing.  I will pm you the details of my plumber who fitted it.  I think the key to the success is in the thermostats and having separate control for different rooms. We just had work done and were close to putting in underfloor heating.In the end we stayed conventional and saved approx 2k.

We have underfloor heating on the ground floor of our house and in all the bathrooms.  It works really well..  No problem keeping the house warm when it is very cold but if there is a sudden change of temperature it does take a couple of hours to heat up or cool down.  We have separate thermostats in each room.  We are very happy with it.

The sub floor on the ground floor extension will be part concrete and the rest timber, then was planning to go for Kardean floor covering which works with underfloor heating.  Not sure it worth the trouble as the comments here are exactly what I am worried about and once it is in the floor I can't really do anything about it.  Weather is exceptionally mild now but when it is freezing cold I'm not sure it will deliver.

I've stayed in a holiday flat that has it, and the owner has installed it in both the holiday flat and his home in France.  Lovely and warm unless the weather is absolutely icy.

I have friends who did it and wholly over-speced their house. It never all worked properly at the same time.

Is it a concrete floor? There should be good ventilation below a wooden floor, so it would need to be close to the top surface to avoid heat loss.
