Horn Lane pollution meeting
We had our quarterly meeting with the businesses on the Horn Lane estate about a week ago. A few highlights:J Simpson moved out of the waste transfer site in mid November. Another company, Quatro, are considering moving into the site but it may be up to three months before they make a decision. So there will be noticeably fewer lorry movements in the area, at least until March.Hansons have recently been prosecuted for breaches of their environmental permit. John Freeman at Ealing Council has been leading the charge on this. They pleaded guilty to five breaches of their permit. Sentencing is awaited. The call for a public health enquiry in the area is still being investigated and we probably won’t know for outcome for a couple of months.Freight trains stopping in the sidings have been idling. DK Shenker, who operate many of the trains, said they instruct their driver to switch off their engines. They are also introducing systems on their trains whereby they are automatically shut down if idling for 15 minutes. Crossrail are going to be doing some work over the Christmas, which will involve some noise.Dust pollution statistics are looking better for 2015. For the first time since records were kept both targets for dust emissions (average dust levels and the number of days of high dust levels) have been achieved. The improvement has come in the second half of the year; no one can quite pin down why that is the case, but years of nagging and campaigning by former MP Angie Bray (who set up this group) and residents like Don Kelly may finally be having a measurable impact.
