Is Ealing council about to turn Acton into a sea of wheelie bins?

Not one, but two. I predict trouble ahead.

I've reported those being abandoned on the pavement and being misused as well.

Yes some will fill with anything and then the council won't take it away.Like the green garden wheelie down the road that is full of paving stones and bags of dog mess. Have had to contact the council twice to get someone to remove it.

How does the introduction of wheelie bins aid in recycling? This appears to be the main reason for the imposition of wheelie bins, surely it is education that is required.  The Afghan Embassy opposite never recycles anything they just put out masses of black sacks, what is to stop them or others just filling the recycling bin with general rubbish. Perhaps a labour councillor could explain?

Help it says nothing on the front page about plastics,does this mean we are putting all recycling together or carrying on with the white bags.

I am old enough to remember dustbins before black bin bags, so it seems we have come full circle - especially as they are about the same size and for single occupancy houses with space at the front, they will work. But what about the many people in rented flats who have no access to front gardens and nowhere to put their rubbish under the terms of their lease?  A lot of tenancy agreements do not allow the tenants to put rubbish out on the property so they just have to put bags out on bin day (which causes its own problem if left out too early). Lots of the properties in the smaller roads mentioned above are private rentals so if anyone has any idea what's going to happen to them, I'd be happy to hear it.

All the things you mention are attached to Boris' name. There isn't any one in the council to attache the wheelies to - or is there? Not that anyone would want to be associated with themHow about Bell's bins !

I'm still curious (and slightly concerned) to see how this plays out.Councils and politicians often get judged by the visible things that they do. Boris Johnson recognised that which is why he invested in highly visual (and massively costly ) things like Boris's Bikes, Boris's cable car, Boris's Bus etc. People feel they can see change.But by the same token - if you cover Acton's streets in plastic bins people will also see that as well - and I suspect many wont like it. The photos posted here from other areas are certainly not flattering.

Packaging is reducing as the regulations regarding it start to work.  As more of it is now designed for recycling - it is noticeable how less of it is made using mixed materials. Boxes have becomes easier to dismantle and flatten, plastic bottles and metal tins are being made with less material and are easier to squash. However we still need to keep up the pressure and complain when we feel that something has been over-packaged or unnecessarily packaged.

My father had a terrible fall, from which he never fully recovered,  moving his wheelie bin to the front of his drive for collection, so I think I will ask now for assistance. Walking in south London we came across streets choked with them, if someone can remind me how to upload photos to the forum I will add them

If tenants are responsible for paying their own council tax they can presumably make their own arrangements with the council to get the bins and boxes they require to get rid of their rubbish.

"The problem is that it is a one-size-fits-all solution."Only it isn't actually a solution and one size does NOT fit all.Interesting to see that the Council intends tightening up on the renting of property.  Absent landlords and landlords not taking proper responsibility for their letting businesses have caused a lot of the problems that the wheelie bins have been sought to solve.

The problem is that its a one size fits all solution.If you have a large front garden and single occupancy housing (as in many of the suburban areas where they have previously been introduced ) - then you probably have somewhere to stow them.But if you have multi-occupancy housing with small or no  front gardens - I'm thinking Chaucer Road, parts of Myrtle road, Alfred Road, Burlington Road etc etc ... then you risk lots of large wheelie bins permanently on the pavements and jostling for space with pedestrians, mums with buggies and everything else.And they are not exactly pretty.

They've caused a lot of problems in Brentford - with just the one.  They are too big for many of the homes.  Presumably they will suit those landlords who haven't provided bins for their tenants and should have done at their own expense.
