Horn Lane Pollution meeting – March
We held our quarterly residents/businesses liaison meeting recently. A few things emerging.Following Hansen’s prosecution and £100k fine, they are putting in remedial measures to prevent further breaches of environmental standards, principally new wheel facilities that shop stop dust being carried onto the highway and beyond. Hansen are also fitting their vehicles with radios, which will mean they will not need their tannoy system – something that has been the cause of noise complaints. The waste transfer remains unoccupied since J Simpson vacated it in November. Another company is considering moving into the site but is still in discussions with the Environment Agency. The company may want to process more tonnage than currently allowed, but the EA said they will only consider this if a new fully enclosed facility were built. Such a building would require planning consent. Watch this space.The Safer Neighbourhood Team turned up to talk about lorries crossing the railway bridge. Legally, it is for the Police to enforce any breaches of the weight limit. The offence is committed by the driver of the vehicle (unlike driving in a bus lane, where the offence is against the registered keeper of the vehicle, irrespective of who was behind the wheel at the time of the offence). CCTV evidence of lorries crossing the bridge therefore isn’t any help as it doesn’t identify the driver. So the SNT are spending one hour week catching and booking offenders. The SNT agreed to pass on vehicle registration to the businesses on the industrial estate, who have always said they’ll take action against any of their drivers using the bridge.No noisy Crossrail works planned for the next three months.
