George Simenon's story, on which this melodrama is based, was published in 1964. It's been set in the present day here and that's a big mistake, IMO, as it seems hopelessly old-fashioned, like a post-war film noir. In fact, I was so sure that were were in the 60s that mention of a mobile phone gave me a jolt.Julien has moved back to his home town with wife and daughter and comes across Esther, also now married, on whom he had a teenage crush. They start an affair. We know from the start of the film that he is under arrest for a serious crime but we have to watch events unfold to see who has been murdered, how, and by whom. It's short and intense. Where would cinema be without those femmes fatales!
