new  bins  / very big

wow monsters they  are very  big  and  they  stick  out  a mile noticed  some  people  got  them  this morning  others  not can  we get  smaller ones at  all

That is why some Councils don't include glass in their wheelie bin collection - and you have to take glass bottles and jars to a street recycling bank or the recycling centre. At present there seem to be more foods moving from glass to plastic - eg ketchups, Marmite, salad creams etc. :( What other changes are there?No plastic bags (LBH when I last looked took carrier bags)No mention of shredded paper (which I've been told like plastic bags interferes with machinery in an MRF) LBH can put an amount of this in their food waste bin and it can be composted or put in a wormery (much more interesting).No Batteries (must be bagged as we did before for the green box and put on top.)Fabric will be wrecked if it goes through an MRF so will have to be separately bagged and put on top. Everything still needs to be rinsed as food waste is always a problem and people work at MRFs - it isn't just fancy machines.

Had my enormous 240L bins removed at about 8pm this evening. Only had a replacement small recycling bin, but said they would deliver a small refuse bin tomorrow. We can now walk through the side passage so some success, total success would be not to have them at all.  We will still have to tip the green box which fits snugly under the sink into the bin and did ask what if the bottles break? The response was if they do they do.

Following my post ref my double delivery I had an apologetic email from the Director? of all things Wheelie Bins:McKenzie@ealing.gov.uk.We are suffering from his incompetence so I don't see why he shouldn't also suffer.

I had my 4 new wheelie bins delivered last week and put them away so it does look a bit better  ..Today i had an other 4 delivered in my front garden !!!!Shall we all boycott those horrible bins ??

Whilst I am seriously up for the veterans section of the Wheelie Bin race against Bedford Park, I think we should take the issue seriously.  I will not be dictated to by Ealing Council about what I will and will not store on my property, neither will I succumb to being a second class citizen whose views have not been taken into account because I don't live in Bedford Park. This has been a top down very badly implemented supposed method of improving recycling.  I am a conscientious recycler and have been for more than forty years and all without the use of wheelie bins. Some very smart streets such as Shilling Place in W7 do not have to have wheelie bins and if Bedford Park and the Brentham Estate can have 120L bins then why can't we? The Ealing Facebook page says that the normal vehicles are not set up to take 120L bins, so have they purchased a special lorry for these wards? If they had carried out proper research they would have realised that most houses would prefer the small bins as they are already recycling to a high level and leased lorries accordingly. I am also incensed that officers have told householders in Ealing that they will have to remove their plants and lay slabs or concrete to accommodate the bins. This will probably negate all the 2% recycling will gain in terms of the environment.

Sorry Bob, we probably got yours on Friday evening and sent them packing to the big wheelie bin recycling depot in the sky.  Can you recycle the actual bins? and I don't mean turn them into cutsie plant containers.

Lorna - this happened to us on Friday evening. I posted on this site and by 00.02 on Saturday morning I had a response from Earl McKenzie who is Deputy Director of all things wheelie bins.  Are Ealing Council listening? They certainly listened to the Bedford Park and Bentham societies who are either being let off wheelie bins altogether or have had small ones delivered as have certain other select roads.

This morning (Bank Holiday Monday), before we were up, three more wheelie bins were delivered, even bigger than the normal sized bins (we now have 7 in total…)  There is such a clutter that I literally couldn’t get out without moving them! I rang Customer Services at Ealing but, of course, although they are delivering (unwanted) bins on a bank holiday, and collecting refuse on a bank holiday, there’s no one available on the phone to deal with the problems, so will have to ring them tomorrow morning to try and get the surplus bins removed… (deep sigh)

- but not of the size we ordered. Had great difficulty persuading them that we already had a set of non requested 240L bins, but they had no 120L bins on board.  Also as the delivery personnel were south Asian and had very little comprehension of English would be interested in their legality to be working in the UK.

Jean,Well said,we too were awoken to the chorus of Wheelie bins being delivered,and yes collection is going to be a nightmare,we should all remember who blighted Ealing with these unwanted monsters and act accordingly at the next Local Council Elections.

I wondered what on earth the noise was in our street this morning, looking our of the window I could see all these horrible wheelie bins being dragged along the street and dumped in every front garden!They are HUGE and fill the width of my side entrance, I pity those who are in terraced houses as these things are a total eyesore!Some properties in my road have steps immediately inside the front gate, I can just imagine the chaos and the noise we will have to put up with each Thursday when they have to collect and empty these monsters!If Ealing Council think that this will stop people from fly-tipping - think again. Those with antisocial habits will never change!Our once lovely Borough of Ealing is going to look horrendous with all these horrible wheelie bins cluttering up the front gardens, and we were not even consulted on whether or not we wanted or needed them!The current contractors cannot even make sure they empty all the food bins - mine is still sitting there after 2 telephone calls and a promise that they would come and empty it!I think parked cars may be damaged when the contractors are trying to haul these ugly bins along the street to be empties!Remember this at the next local election folks!

I am holding my breath as I am the only house on my road not to have been given the giant wheelie bins. i did request smaller ones when I got the leaflet a few weeks ago which had a link to request the smaller size.

I will also email them and quote the Chiswick W4 stuff.  They are extremely poor ward councillors and rarely respond. I have voted Labour all my life, but after much soul searching in future I will continue to vote Labour in National and GLA elections, but not locally until the labour candidates can prove they are listening to their constituents.

Bedford Park councillors have taken up the cause of their upset constituents and have arranged a dedicated email address at Ealing Council. Their large wheelie bins will be swopped for small ones by the end of this week. See ChiswickW4 website and the help Gary Malcolm has given his constituents.

1) We were never consulted.2) We were told that wheelie bins encouraged/improved recycling - however no officer or elected member has been able to supply the data proving this.3) We live in a conservation area, wheelie bins are not a good fit with properties c. 1900.4) I ordered small refuse and recycling bins and have been delivered two enormous bins making access down the side of the house impossible.

There is no question about it Tony - they DO look dreadful and they are too big for many of the terraced streets that we live in!WRAP said that there isn't a one size fits all solution and they are right.  This is all because the Councils failed to address the problems of people who would not or could not safeguard their waste and recycling until it was collected.  It just looks like they have  fallen for the big sell and a cheap deal by the collection company.  It will put a lot of people off recycling because the bins are just far too big for them and too difficult to manoeuvre in the small amount of space that they have.  If there isn't space to take one out without the other to make the right one accessible each week (as I have seen them squashed up against each other between front wall and house wall) then I can't see it doing anything to increase recycling.They should have found a better and safer solution for small terraces and should still find one.

In the information pack there is a sheet of sticky letters and numbers. From this sheet I can’t get 2 of my 2-digit house number from it? It matters as I wouldn’t particularly like smelly bins to be returned one morning.

I have rerequested a small refuse bin but there is no means on the site of rerequesting a small size recycling bin.

I also ordered small recycling and waste bins. We rarely fill our green box or our black bag which is usually about one third full. We are told that wheelie bins aid recycling, well I have recycled for almost forty years, our green box fits snugly under the sink and I will now have to lift it and empty it into the wheelie bin. I have half a mind to stop recycling completely and put everything in the one bin and lose the second one. Also we were not consulted on this on this.

Maggie  Ask to have your home reassessed. Don't put them right under your windows or where they might block your exit if there is a fire.

SaraYou could always offer to give your redundant bins away - or sell them of course on one of the local websites eg this.  H&F don't have wheelie bins.  Or somebody in LBE or LBH whose home has been declared unsuitable for wheelies might like them or one of them.

Monstrosities delivered to our road today - by contractors from Cornwall...They had no smaller black bins and told those complaining that they had ordered one to contact the council. I asked to only be given a blue bin as had told council that I wanted to share with neighbour (even though 2 days after their deadline that, I believe, was changed at some point from the 30th April to the 21st or 23rd - can't remember exactly). Nope - they said they had to deliver them, or they would get into trouble...What a waste of money to knowingly deliver the wrong items/unwanted items and then have to collect/exchange them. Well, keeping in mind that this is Ealing Council, they probably will keep fobbing us off until doomsday...

Actually I am happy to re-home half a dozen green  bins as they make great containers to grow veg in. you can punch a couple of hole is the bottom surround them with copper tape as a slug barrier an grow veg in them. Salad, tomatoes, courgette are favourites.Big black bins can be great for potatoes.

They say:'What should I do with my old recycling containers?We won’t be collecting old containers from properties and residents are instead encouraged to reuse them in the garden, shed or home or donate them to neighbours or local groups and schools that can use them. Residents that don’t wish to reuse or donate them can take their green boxes to Greenford Reuse and Recycling Centre to be recycled. Unfortunately, we can’t recycle the white plastics sacks.Residents can also take unwanted green boxes to various collection points around the borough to be recycled. The 'collection points' will be the same as for Christmas trees, so Acton Park, Springfield Gardens, etc.They even point you to their Pinterest page for suggestions of what you can do to a) reuse your old bins and b) decorate the new ones! Can't imagine what would be worse - the bins themselves, or the bins decorated as a phone box, Tardis, R2D2...

I have now been told that if I contact the Council on servicecharge@ealing.gov.uk and ask for our situation to be reassessed they may let us opt out.  Not holding my breath but I have asked.

According to the instructions, you can apply for a smaller (or larger) bin, or to share with a neighbour, but requests for this will not be processed until after the new collection system goes live on 6 June, which seems a terrible waste of effort, as presumably already delivered bins will then have to be changed over.All you could wish to know - or wish you didn't have to - is available on their website: https://www.ealing.gov.uk/binsSorry, Maggie - opting out doesn't seem to be an option... but you could always try arguing!
