Waitrose decision

Probably no surprise that Waitrose has pulled out of the new Oaks, but I feel that those who campaigned against the redevelopment can justifiably feel anger about the outcome. Almost certainly the developer was playing a cynical game all along and the council either fell in with them or were gullible idiots. Council leader Julian Bell, who played the Waitrose card endlessly, now looks like a complete fool. The suggestion from the council that a retailer 'of similar profile' is lined up to fill the vacancy is another bit of nonsense. The only similar retailer would be M&S Food and it would be a miracle if they took on the space. I notice that in an earlier thread people are hoping the new tenant will be Aldi or Lidl. I suspect they will get their wish, which will scarcely move the Oaks on from the days when its flagship supermarket was Netto. How depressing!

With regards to the size, there was mention that the supposed Waitrose designation was to be divided in four, enough to house a Lidl etc.  As someone who was mildly influenced by the promise of said fancy grocer when choosing a location for my business a year ago, I am philosophical about the outcome.  it is what it is.  I think the area is experiencing it's own organic growth through the will of the residents and local small businesses and whilst it might take a little longer, it might create a little bit more individuality than that of the cache of the association with a brand which most of us (no matter how well heeled we might portray ourselves) cannot afford to do our weekly shop in.  A Lidl or Aldi is a great leveller.  Suck it up and lets see what happens!

No-one that was hoping for a Waitrose is going to visit anything else - especially if it means running the gauntlet of Acton High St. They'll just continue to use Ocado, Chiswick Sainsbury or smaller independent delivery services. The Waitrose in Chiswick is a shockingly bad one anyway, so their standards are on the slide. The Sainsbury and M&S are always better stocked.

I think 'similar' means 'supermarket'. I'd settle for a decent Tesco to give Morrisons some competition. Site is possibly too big for a Lidl/Aldi.
