wheelie Bins

Well we got our wheelie bins today, The lids don't close properly so when hit by a gust of wind the lid flies open,also we are not allowed plastic bags in recycling I have always put my plastics in a clear bag ,how are we suppose to keep the bins clean and dry, So now we will have dirty smelly bins everywhere with rubbish flying up and down the street. (OH THE JOYS)

Hi Libby, My dad is elderly and does not have much recycling. He was told that there was no choice but to order the 240l blue bin which is unmanageable for him and totally unsuitable. He has refused this bin. Please could you inform me of your contact at LBE regarding the smaller blue bin. This would be much appreciated. Is the smaller blue bin 120 litre capacity?

And meanwhile they still haven't worked out where the illegal and probably unsafe conversions and houses in multiple occupation are from which they should be collecting revenue.What a waste.

Re smaller blue bins: they're not available, not officially, not according to the leaflets or on line information, but I understand they do exist... but are only issued 'in exceptional circumstances' for elderly/infirm residents. Kept that quiet, didn't they!Just another example of poor planning.(My 3 giant surplus bins are still lurking on my property awaiting collection in case anyone from Ealing Council is reading this...)

Thanks Libby. In fact I requested small bins online at the earliest opportunity. Result was: a/p messages re wheelies but when I called back the guy was never at his desk and of course, I gave up.(Another story - the utter refusal of council staff to engage with public - the impenetrable barrier of the automated message.)Blue bins aren't available in the smaller size are they?

It's a question of proportion - in the tiny gardens in our street they are monstrous. Stored to the left of the path they block the doorstep, to the right they obscure the front windows. Conversely, my Boss who lives in Ealing -large family, large premises, large garden - is delighted with his. P.S. The plastic bag recycling bin I used to use at Morrisons had disappeared last time I was there.

That is question you need to ask the supermarkets in particular as they are the worst offenders. I can't understand why plastic bags can't be recycled, it can't be the most difficult technological challenge ever. And anyway why are they selling bags that can't be recycled in the first place.

Council did warn that lid might not fit well at start because of the stacked storage - but said that it would over time as the bin returns to designed shape.

Was anybody ever fined for putting out their unprotected rubbish sacks too early?  Or even warned?  I sometimes wonder whether any actual thinking goes on.Flats were provided with plastic bags to put their recycling in and separated paper and bottles in carrier bags were always emptied.  Many people have now learnt to avoid them most of the time. Recycling put into the bin when rinsed and dry shouldn't make a mess of the bin.If people use the weekly food waste bin then they should have fewer problems.  IF there is a problem with the lid on delivery of a wheelie try and reject it or complain immediately as it is faulty and get a replacement requested PDQ!They are NOT the best thing since sliced bread, are now out of date, there are other options and other places have moved on.

We may have to get used to them, but size matters! Many only need the small bins and this patently was not taken into account when they ordered the bins. Council officers are telling householders to pave over their front gardens to accommodate them. This is not good practice.

I'm quite looking forward to rubbish NOT blowing all over the street after the foxes have ripped into the bags because people put them out too early. Additionally, one has never been supposed to put plastic bags into the recycling - those bags are responsible for causing machinery break-downs at the sorting plant and ruining entire batches of recyclables. I think we need to recognise that most of Europe, if not the First World, has a wheelie bin and that we're simply going to have to get used to it!

Still waiting for ours, hopefully the smaller one I ordered. But neighbour has agreed to share ours so will try and not accept them.

yes  was  given  a 320 ltr  not  the  120 ltr we  asked  for  glad I was  at  home  for  the  guys to change  it to  a 140  as  the  have  run out  of  120 and 240 bins only 140 and  320 they  are  as  big  as  café would  require and  yes  the  lid  is  broke

Yep we got ours yesterday in Berrymead Gardens. They look terrible and are a real Blot on the Landscape to say the least.
