Acton town square research

Hi everyone, I am an MSc student in Sustainable Urbanism at University College London, and am currently doing my final research on squares in suburbia London.I have several questions that I hope you can help me with, namely...- What do you think the acton town square (the mount) is for?- How often do you go to the square? and how do you perceive the square? (i.e. what do you use it for and what your sentiments are regarding the square)Any kind of help/discussion is very much appreciated, thank you!Cheers,Abraham

Acton Market run by local charity Action West London (4 days a week, 50 weeks a year) was set up to bring life to the Town squareand Acton High Street after consultation with local people. The Market project also aims to bring Acton's diverse communities together and give local people a chance to set up in self employment. The local police say it plays a major role in reducing anti social behaviour and making the area safer.

Luckily I have not given up Acton-----and am not a bigot.    I believe we live in a democracy where we have a vote and can express the truth as we see it - brushing unsavoury matters under the carpet never solved anything.    As the in and out of Europe debate has proven.In order to solve the problems associated with the Mount it is essential to know its history and background.  To date the Council, the Police and the local community associations have failed to deal with the difficult problems associated with the site - perhaps Abraham's research will help solve them.Sara your breathtaking posts amount to bullying and prevent others from expressing what they are feeling,  This site is an open forum upon which all those with opinions which do not happen to coincide with your own express their views.

There have been problems with this land for the last 35 years to my knowledge.  There used to be an underground toilet on the site which attracted the gay community and others up to no good.  And I seem to remember that a local labour Councillor was attracted the site.The drunks are attracted to the solice the church gives them and the free food from the catholic church in the high street at lunch time.  Many travel from Hammersmith to take advantage of this facility.Drug dealing has also been a problem both in the square and on the old burial site in Churchfield Road where eastern europeans find it nice to sit in the sun drinking their cans of beer (urinating behind the headstones) - despite the location nearby of the Community Police office.Local people with disposable income choose to drive to chiswick where the shopping and eating facilities are more to their taste.No doubt when the flats are finally erected in Churchfield Road - and depending on moves into them - this unsavoury situation will undoubtedly continue.

Hi Abraham,Here's my response..- I think the mount is a wasted opportunity. It's quite central to the small high street that Acton has got however it's not really maintained and doesn't really attract locals. As the previous response says, it attracts only drunks and homeless people. It's quite unpleasant and sometimes outright filthy, especially in the evenings..- However, I do visit Acton market on the mount occasionally just to see what's on for sale. In the past, I bought a nice quality rug, couple of tees and the recent addition of fish stall is great.. I also like the takeaway options there.I'd also like council and Morrisons to spend some thoughts (and money) to make it a nicer, safer and kid-friendly place.Cheers and Good Luck,Sandeep

For me the square is a wasted opportunity. It could be so much more attractive and purposeful. It seems like a space that isn't well thought about. Apparently Morrisons owns the space infront of the supermarket but has no plans to develop it or think creatively about the space. The square attracts drunks. It should be a place the community can enjoy AND feel proud of. There is a long way to go... But I'm not sure the businesses or council care that much. A few trees to do not a community square make!
