Fox preying on cat

I found a fox preying on my neighbour's male mixed tabby and white cat in my garden this morning. He was hiding up a tree to escape it. Normally cats are not disturbed by foxes. Could this be because the foxes can't access the rubbish bags as much as they used to?

We used to have one a couple of years ago who liked sunbathing on the shed roof!

Wow. That's virtually noon for a fox. Unusual.  I've never seen them in my garden after daybreak. Here's hoping they find some new foraging sites soon. I've never bought the standard vet line that pet cats and urban foxes tend not to tangle. When one of mine was old enough to be out but still small, an older fox chased him through the cat flap and he only made it in by a whisker. They weren't playing tag.

You're welcome Susan and thanks for the link. I've read a few comments on that page. Unfortunately this fox must have been starving. It was circling the tree determined to catch the cat around 10:45am,  which is late for a nocturnal animal surely. It trotted shyly away when I entered the garden and the cat clambered down to safety. My cat always looks around nervously in the morning and evening before going out, she's semi feral and quite alert concerning  these predators because they're regulars but if they can catch squirrels then cats are easy prey too. I feel sorry for them but may need to call the RSPCA to get some support.

Thanks for the heads up Serena. I've got two cats and worried this might happen. Mine were safely inside the other night after 11 when there was a major ruckus in the garden next door. Sounded as if all the cats in Acton were at it. When I raced out to put an end to it, I heard growling that certainly didn't come from a cat.
