Strange Recycling

Today at the crack of dawn, noisily as usual, the truck came for the recycling and, as they have done 2 or 3 times before, they took whatever I had in my dustbin as well. To me this shows that they do not know what they are doing. It also raises concerns about the actual recycling system.So, despite the council patting itself on the back for their marvellous efforts, I bet you that they will soon find that this contractor is a shambles......and that this whole project is unworkable.And fancy introducing fortnightly collections in "Summer".  Everything stinks.

If they were serious they could have been noticing whether there were food waste bins being used or not. In the future you can expect them NOT to take any extra side waste. People should have very little residual waste.  Clinking bags are also a big giveaway.I agree with Peter Evans that they should have been using stickers.

Today in my street I noticed that the contractors actually took all the extra black bags which were on top and beside the overloaded wheelie bins.Common sense at last!No point in putting them in the empty bin because it would be even worse by the time of the next collection.

If the collectors find excess black bags alongside a black wheelie bin they can presumably toss them into the emptied wheelie bin to be collected next time rather than leaving them loose in the street. And perhaps put a sticker on the bin to explain what they've done and why?

According to the Around Ealing magazine which was delivered today Ealing Council stated the following:Black Wheelie Bins must be put out with the lid closed' Extra bags left beside or on top will NOT be collected.Now as I walk along our streets it is obvious that many households have overflowing black wheelie bins, plus extra black bags piled on top and next to the bins!As the contractors now only collect the household rubbish every fortnight what on earth do they imagine is going to happen with the black bags full of household rubbish?  It doesn't take rocket science to work out what this will be like from one collection day to the next one a fortnight later? More black bags will be simply added to the pile yet the contractors will refuse to collect the extra black bags! Rats, foxes and cats will have a field day because I am absolutely certain that these black bags will also contain left food and packaging which will mean the streets will be even more messy!Now the new wheelie bins were supposedly introduced to stop black bags being pulled open by foxes and rats but is now obvious that this new system is NOT having the desired effect.Some households might have too much rubbish so they would need larger bins or maybe they are not sorting their waste properly.I now have a smaller black wheelie bin because the large one was far too big and taking up space on my property.It will be interesting to see how Ealing Council will ensure that we don't end up with rotting black bags of rubbish in the front gardens. Sarah if people recycled properly there would be no iussue with smell. Food bins collected weekly deals with that.

I've seen food waste bins being tipped into one wheelie bin being rolled along the street.  The same procedure with garden waste bags on garden waste collection day. This is what happens also in other parts of the country. I agree there is still too much litter being dropped or cleaned out of cars and left behind!

I have noticed a contractor tipping all the green boxes in a blue wheelie, but only to just have one big container to tip into the lorry rather than dozens of small ones. It is my impression that the bin lorries have separate chutes for food waste.We have far few incidences of ripped bags strewn across our street since the wheelies have been introduced. Plenty of litter dropped by passers by though.

It is most worrying that they don't know who has an assisted collection as these people can end up blocked in or out by the bin not being put back carefully or what everyone is in fear of now because of the reduced number of collections - NO collection - and difficulty in contacting the Council.  The Council CANNOT and MUST NOT be allowed to expect everybody to be online.The Contractors MUST carry the sticky labels to warn of items that should not have been put out for collection or should have been presented differently eg NOT bagged.

There doesn't seem to be any continuity in the collection crews (or vehicles) so I wouldn't be surprised if they also don't know what they should actually be doing. Please tell me different!

I have observed the same thing about recycling and refuse being dumped together. Collectors both looked confused as if they didn't know if they should collect or not.New system is a total shambles, as I have had several issues of non-collection and no response to letter about it.

As I cycled to work this morning past rows of neatly presented blue bins, one bin man was dragging two black bins to the lorry and the other was walking ahead of the truck emptying green bucket-bins into the blue bins.... I live in a flat and don't have the new wheelies, but it did seem a bit odd that it was all just getting mixed in?

Recently it was a case of having to hold our noses walking along the street because of rotting black bags!Ah well, I guess the flies and the vermin will be delighted!

Sarah, I just hope that Ealing Council does not decide to so 3 weekly or even monthly collections because in some parts of the country this is now the norm!Heaven help us!
