Threat of big fine may help us fight dumpers

Have twitter convo with councillor Dan Crawford earlier and he says he's asked that streets be cleaned but nothing on whether discussion is underway to revert to earlier regime. Also says warning letters will be sent regarding bins permanently parked on pavements.

Susan if you think this useless Council manage to successfully prosecute more than 5 people in the next year I will eat my wheelie bin ( If I ever get delivered one )

There are houses that never should have been issued with large wheelies as they cannot be manoeuvred - they do need a turning circle - and are a fire hazard.  Older residents are being put at risk and are being put into the position where they ought to have assisted collections for safety's sake.So many of the problems could have been sorted if there was a proper procedure of seeking to deal with the people who were having problems and needed help and support.  But no - a hands-off one-size-fits-all-but-patently-doesn't dictat.  This implementation has created problems where there weren't any before. You couldn't make it up.And it worries me that there has not been good enough information easily downloadable from the website since Enterprise took over. All brochures that are issued should also be downloadable so that when you look online you can recognise it when you find it.  You shouldn't have people complaining that they have been unable to easily get food waste bins and had given up. If you want them to recycle then you have to be constantly proactive about it with teamwork.  We have quite a big transient population. Unfortunately it just starts to look as though problems have been created in order to manipulate figures.

Id like to see the senior managers and the Cabinet responsible for this new policy out of the streets seeing for themselves. An hour in the evening three or four days a week should give them the necessary clues.Its obvious to us that the houses on Alfred Road can't accommodate wheelie bins. So why are there ten of them standing in the street?We can see that for older and disabled residents, the wheelie bins are simply too heavy. So where is the system for them?Any of us can tell which streets have been swept and which have not. Mine has leaves left over from last year. So, can we see the rota please?Those of us living or working on streets with regular fly tipping have a good idea which apartments dump their rubbish. We suggested the Council write to these tenants and their landlords pointing out that the system is not optional. It hasn't been done.Come on the Council! You are better than this. Expecting residents to fill in a five page on line form to report  flytipping and again, when you fail to deal is unwise. We are getting mightily impatient.

Agree on all points. I've tried mightily to embrace the new system - the old one also created eyesores and strewn rubbish - but am fast coming round to the reality it's terminally flawed in design and execution. The wheelies are indeed that bit too big to manoeuvre. Haven't seen the smaller ones yet but await promised swap to those. But if the stories are true of the bin crews dumping all willy nilly what the heck is the point of it all?Dan Crawford, the only councillor visibly on the case, seems open to the idea of daily swat teams to swoop and collect and knock on doors. Bin crews also need to be told to use their heads and take away bagged rubbish if a bin is already full. Only when everyone has the bins and crews are properly trained can the slovenly be justifiably fined. As a priority now, the street cleaners need to be put back on their weekly rotas.

Well I hope that they will also have some smaller wheelie bins available together with food waste bins readily available for residents as well.  Using the black sacks in the past meant that few were really aware of exactly what waste they were making or how much.  Not everybody can manoeuvre these large bins in the small front gardens and they are bigger than many people need if they reduce their waste and undo the bottom/side of cardboard boxes.  An Italian friend showed me how how to flatten those ribbed plastic water bottles several years ago.  They flatten top down like a concertina. Not that I believe in using bottled water!  I always ask for tap water in a restaurant.Guidance should also be given on how to reduce the volume of waste and extra info for flats as it seems not all received this.  Hopefully as more people get their waste back under control it should get easier.
