street cleaner spotted

Not only did I see a street cleaner this morning, but he was actually using a broom gadzooks

Saw 4 today mid-morning sweeping road near Acton Park entrance near Acton Central station.

The regular street cleaner who does Churchfield Road every day is back, brush in hand, I will have to ask him next time I see him what is happening, he is a really nice guy and really thorough!

I notice that LB Camden are proposing issuing 120l wheelies for their residents' fortnightly residual waste...Now they have lots of flats and I bet they have good collection systems for them.

Well our guy obviously fought your guy for the broom and won - because today the street has been swept!And not only do we a have a temporary lack of cigarette butts everywhere, we have a swanky new 'solar compactor' litter bin, too.Not that anyone puts anything in the bin...but maybe they will now? We can only hope.

Buildings that have been converted into flats without enough space allocated inside or out for the amount of waste that people are making pose problems.  Some of these will have had space allocated in the plans for conversion.So does the idea that everything that you don't want can be just chucked away.  Where is "away"?  As well as needing a good collection system we need to take more responsibility for the amount of waste that we make.  How much of that waste is unnecessary and our fault as we plan badly and mismanage what we can now buy on credit? www.therubbishdiet.org.uk and www.myzerowaste.com  can help but most of all we can help ourselves an awful lot and save money by being more careful.

Our street was throughly cleaned last week after a month. It seems that the supervisor didn't know about this and so got it done immediately when alerted. Sadly we have a problem with fly tipping, residents dumping stuff on the pavement (they have no room for wheelie bins) and dog owners dropping black bags of dog poo on the street. So after a week, Alfred Road is back to how it was before.

They usually use an extended hand picker which can grab the many bottles and cans without the person bending, but not very small items.

North Acton has had a visit from the lesser-spotted street sweeper too! Or at least, there are lots of green bags, with 'street sweeper's rubbish' or something written on them, bulging on the pavements.But there are also still thousands of cigarette butts everywhere...so I would suggest no actual 'sweeping' has taken place. Maybe your guy had the broom ;)

I often do see street cleaners working, the problem here is that the council extended the pavement into the first traffic lane just downhill from the road drains to force traffic away from parked cars, so that all the rubbish builds up on top of the drains but the mechanical roadsweeper is unable to get near to clear it. I have not seen the gulley cleaner for a very long time, and floodwater runs across the pavement into gardens.
