Tree removal

I'm fuming! A van and a attached chipper pulled up outside my house and has removed a lovely tree. It wasn't large - took less than 30 mins to do. I challenged a workman and he said it was unsafe, which is absolute nonsense. It was however very close to markings on the pavement for a new driveway! The driveway is for a house which is being converted into multiple flats (with massive extensions).  The workman said he was working for the council.  Feels more like the council is working for the developer.

I hadn't noticed anything on this tree and it's close to my house. I truly hope it was for this reason as it would be very irritating if it was to help a development. I'll take a closer look at the tree stump. Hopefully it will be replaced.

There have ben notices on some trees for weeks from the council on our road saying that the trees have a decay fungus which is not visible on the outside. I saw them chop approx 3 trees down even ones not near driveways and unfortunately today I saw the rings of the stump and it looked like it was indeed diseased from the inside ... hoping that they will be replaced by a different species in time and that we may have avoided some accidents.

It would be interesting to know if they really were working for the Council (it is easy to look official) and who exactly had agreed the removal of this tree.
