Distraction theft at NatWest in Acton High Street
Two people at the two ATMs at Nat west in the high street. The one on the right finished and left, I went up, inserted card, put in pin. Nothing happened. The previous "customer" turned back to me at the ATM and said "that machine's not working, you need to re-enter your pin and press the left hand button."Like a complet idiot, I did just that. Didn't see card re-appear and thought the machine had swallowed it.Went into the bank to say so - completely unhelpful. Called their hotline number on the ATM. Ditto. The next customer said there was nothing wrong with the ATM - so I realised I had been defrauded, rushed to HSBC - which closes for ever this week. Stopped card. But not before the thief had stolen £500. Who even know you could take that much out? I certainly never have. He then went to Golders Green and tried again. But it was stopped by then.Reported to police. Apparently he should be on the CCTV. And I should get the money back.So if you get a helpful comment like that from a stocky, black chap, mid-height, say 5 ft 9 ins, reasonably well-groomed, short hair, with respectable clothes and a mildly south London accent - don't take any notice.I feel a complete idiot although it's the first time it's ever happened to me. I hope it is the last.
