'London Air Quality Polling A London Councils commissioned poll has found that nearly half of Londoners feel their health has been affected by poor air quality. Three quarters of respondents agreed that air quality is an issue in the capital. This rose to more than 80% among those who are newer to London, those who cycle, those who use public transport and those whose health is affected by pollution.Cllr Julian Bell, London Councils' executive member for transport and environment, said: "This research is the first of its kind to be carried out in the capital and highlights the very real concerns many Londoners have about air pollution and its impact on their health day-to-day. “The fact so many people reported a negative impact on their health, and concerns about the health of their children, is worrying and shows this continues to be an issue of huge significance in our city." '

PM10 pollutants which are found in the air In Horn Lane - the second highest in London - are both invisible and cannot be prevented from entering your lungs as they are too small.  They cause cancer.Cllr. Bell knows this - as the matter has been well known to the Council's Environmental Health Department for the past 10 years to my knowledge.  The industrial sites by the railway line are well known to be breaking the rules and regulations concerning pollutants - has Cllr. Bell been successful in changing the situation in this area????

Methane, although less prevalent than CO2 is 30 odd times more damaging to the atmosphere. Ditto the gunk they replaced cfc's with.

Philippa,Human being s and animals exhale Carbon Dioxide new figures state this is a bigger problem now,with the every expansion of the population,more and trees are require to provide more oxygen and sock up the Carbon Dioxide.

However the Clean Air Act was resisted by the government of the time as they were under pressure from vested interests, such as the coal distributors.It was only passed eventually as a result of concerted pressure from back bench MPs over a number of years.It is the same today; government will need to be dragged kicking and screaming into doing something.

It's a different pollution now.  Too many cars and lorries spewing out fumes and sitting in traffic unable to move.

Many of you are to young to remember,back in the 50s we had peasoupers,thick fog,could not see much anywhere,forgotten now cleared by the clean air Act,things are improving and in time will be better.

I thought Bell was an expert in public housing and how to get a council house whilst also owning a private property...seems now he is an expert in transport.
