RIP Nigel Spearing former MP Acton
Sad news yesterday at the passing of Nigel Spearing the last MP for the old Acton seat from 1970 -74 ,and lost it when new boundaries included large parts of Ealing to become Ealing-Acton. He then won a by election weeks later and became the MP for Newham South until 1997.Lifelong West London resident. What was Acton's loss became Newham's gain. He was a tireless worker in Acton constituency and cycled everywhere. I knew him well at this time and respected his decency and independent spirit. Very decent human being and cared about those less fortunate and was steeped in the Methodist Church with a long family association in Hammersmith King Street Church. Locally took up issues and one I remember when Dept of Transport proposed to build a highway across Ealing Common 'new' north circular. Sir George Young said build a tunnel.Nigel with all his common sense said NO to both and the answer was to manage traffic properly/speed limits. Time on that has proved him right and we still have Ealing Common. A man of common sense. RIP Nigel and thank you.
