Duke of York Pub/ Shisha Bar Planning application

Just seen some planning  application signs on lampposts about  the Duke of York pub / Shisha Bar near Stuart, Derwentwater Rds and Horn Lane/ Steyne Rd,  that people might want  to comment on, particularly in relation to the impact the Shisha bar has had on local traffic and parking.The info states that the bar is open from 10am to midnight Mon- Fri and 10am - 2am Saturday and Sunday.DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL YOUR COMMENT IS INVITEDAn application has been made to carry out the following development: Address:  The Duke Of York 86 Steyne Road Acton London W3 9NUProposal:      Redevelopment of the land at the rear of no 86 and change of use from Class A3 (Food and Drink) to Sui Generis (Shisha Cafe) (Part Retrospective Application)

just a reminder that objections or comments about this planning application need to be in by this wed 19th.it seems that the shisha bars way of dealing with the comments around pavement parking has been to put up a rope barrier halfway across the pavement outside the garden entrance, meaning that the cars are now parking half on the pavement and half in the road - as well as on all the available bends and corners on local streets. So still hazardous to pedestrians and other traffic !!

I also heard from a friend of mine that part of the garden with the strange gate at the back doesn't actually belong to the shisha bar, apparently they opened it up and went onto the council belonging ground, not sure if that is possible at all but considering how the public pavements are being treated it may as well be the case.

The shisha business is obviously getting really popular.Not surprising when you can charge £20 a smoke in Ealing/Acton/Park Royale and £40-£50 in the Edgware Road. My guest - an expert - says the cost is about £1 a time to the bar - not including service and overheads. Still - a better mark up than wine or beer.

Traffic wardens rarely come round. Most of the cars on the pavement are quite large, 4x4s Land Rovers, Blacked out Mercedes etc. Even if they did get tickets it would be small change to them (or if they are embassy related they ignore the tickets anyway). The only real deterrent is what happened outside Actife and it’s sidekick Amigo’s. The cycling lane was continually blocked by parked cars until bollards were planted. And since pavements are in question I might as well point out that The London Star Hotel opposite (another Shisha establishment) seems to be able to take up increasing large amounts of the pavement with their outside tents to facilitate the smoking of Shisha. It was never like that before and I don’t recall planning for this? - perhaps you don’t need it then?

The shisha bar has certainly cleaned up the old pubs image . But why someone wants to smoke a shisha at 2 am is odd to me , but live and let live.Obviously parking seems to be the only issue .

Ewa, I have noticed the cars parked on the pavement all the time.  It's appalling, and I have always been concerned that anyone with mobility problems, pushing a buggy or in a wheelchair will be put at risk.  Interestingly, they never seem to get tickets so maybe the traffic wardens just don't venture that far from the centre.  Pavements are for people!  I am not sure what can be done but maybe one of the ward councillors is reading this and can sort it out.

Only because you haven't noticed parking, traffic problem it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, I had to walk along the road so did the  other pedestrians it is unexceptable and like I said incredibly dangerous!! Maybe it is a new custom in Acton to disregard any established rules why don't we all start parking on the pavements and see what happens!?

Alison didnt comment about drinking - so does that mean the rest of us can't?I meant that customers were unlikely to be unruly - which is often a licensing/neighbourhood consideration. I haven't noticed a traffic parking problem - but have only observed the shisha bar from driving towards Horn Lane - and did not see any obstruction.I sort of doubt either the Rocket or Station House are about to launch same - and its too late for an April Fool. If they want to, good luck to them.

Alison commented on the impact on parking and traffic in nearby roads, nothing about drinking.I hear, The Station House and The Rocket are to become Shisha bar's soon. I wonder if the streets in Poet's Corner will suffer the same fate?

There is actually a huge problem with shisha bar, its friendly customers park throughout the day on the pavement making it impossible for mothers with children and other pedestrians  to use the pavement, instead they have to dodge cars on the road. This afternoon I was coming back from Springfield park with my three year old and we had to walk all along the road on the other side there was an older lady with one of the balance trolleys also struggling along the road, pavements were full of cars, there was  a line of them from the corner of horn lane all the way to Stuart Road and at least six parked on the other side!!!! Absolutely unacceptable and so incredibly dangerous!!!

The shisha bar has been there a little while - is there any problem with it?Shisha smokers don't drink largely.And there is already one opposite.I don't see a problem - except they didn't give my lovely Syrian guest a job - although he is a whizz at making shisha and had his own shish bar till it was bombed to smithereens.
