Argos in Homebase no longer.

Argos within the Homebase on Western Avenue closed down last Saturday, 21st July.  Maybe the London Borough of Ealing should just build flats, flats and flats in Acton, and do away with shops altogether.

My answer would be a no.  Think the aim is to build as many flats as possible, pocket as much money as possible, and how the residents (old and new) live/cope with this, not their problem - they've moved on to building other flats elsewhere, to pocket yet more money.  Meanwhile, we're left with the fallout, and no interest from the council.  I really think it's time Acton had it's own council and administration, as being under Ealing council is really not serving the residents and community of Acton.

Hundreds of flats are being built in and around East Acton. Is the surrounding infra-structure being changed to accommodate all these additional thousands of people: nurseries, schools, GP practices, retail shops, parking, improved and increased public transport etc ?

I think it was on here a while ago Sara that it has all the planning permission - sadly.  I read that flats aren't selling well, but that houses are being snapped up.  Not sure, but if the case - to keep building more and more flats, with many potential buyers wishing to park their car nearby, and have shops nearby (neither of which is the case), seems ill-thought out.  But, I guess where the council is involved and money is involved...

Its all got planning permission hasn't it?Are all these flats selling? I thought there was a bit of glut in new-builds. Though conversions seem to be going at over half a million for two beds. gulp!

Peter, the site is to be a massive development of flats (overlooking the splendour of the Western Avenue, and all that healthy air!) with no parking facilities.  The plans are apparently already drawn up.

Closing Homebase is nothing to do with Ealing council.Homebase was bought by the Australian Bunnings company in one of the most disastrous retail takeovers in recent times. The Homebase stores were then bought up for £1 by a 'specialist restructuring company' who plans to 'significantly downsize' the operation, and it would be no surprise if the Acton site was worth far more to them as a building development than as a shop.

Homebase close for good on 21st September, and if you buy anything, you cannot return to them but can to any other store (would imagine they're clearing everything out so no returns for that reason).
