Acton Post Office

The search function doesn't seem to be working so have had to start a new thread on this. I went to the main PO today and picked up a leaflet. It is closing on 24 October but they have not found replacement premises. There may be speculation about how hard they have tried. Anyway it is closing with no replacement which is clearly an issue for the elderly, disabled and those who can't get to the other branches very easily. People still don't realise that the Post Office is closing in a couple of week's time. There were a few shocked folk on Saturday morning when staff were telling them.

I find it very strange, they have put no notices up outside announcing closure. Only the leaflets and one poster inside. Disappearing quietly it seems.

I got this message a few weeks ago.Dear Mr CrumptonActon Post Office® 23-29 King Street, London, W3 9LDThank you for your email dated 14 August 2018, regarding the temporary closure of Acton Post Office.  Your enquiry was passed to the National Consultation Team, and I am responding to you directly. I recognise your concern about the impending closure of this branch and I would like to reassure you that this will not be a permanent closure; it will remain a temporary closure while we continue working hard to get a service reinstated as soon as we can.We are fully aware of how important the Post Office is for our customers in your local community.  The branch has to close due to circumstances beyond our control, in which the premises are being withdrawn at the behest of our landlord for their use; it was not our intention to close the branch and I would assure you that we do not underestimate the difficulties the local community may face during this closure period. Please be assured we take the temporary closure of this branch seriously and our field team are working hard to find a solution.  At this stage we are not able to put a timeframe on establishing replacement services as it is important that any new service introduced is sustainable for both the Post Office and any new operator.  We are aware that the landlord plans to include a retail unit in the new development and once we are able to survey this for suitability and consider commercial terms we will be able to add this as an option into our considerations.For your convenience, please find attached a copy of your customer letter with full details about the temporary closure and alternative branches that be used during that time.Thank you for your patience and accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused during the closure period.

The consumer magazine Which is currently asking for comments on post office closures - I have responded. Obviously it is not just about Acton, but every little helps.

I have sent an email to (Christine Moore) in hope of a response I have stated it is ludicrous that they closed North Ealing. & West Acton sub post offices when there are so many local residents in those surrounding areas Given the fact that West Acton had a major refurbishment and the facility’s are still in place they could possibly move some of the Acton staff to there. Even if this was open with reduced hours.  It would still be helpful for a lot of people Watch this space!!!But won’t hold breath!

I wrote this here many months ago - the post office wants to get rid of all crown offices because they have long-serving staff on still excellent contracts (by today's standards). The sub offices in places like WHS can pay their staff minimum wage, and are responsible for the entire operation. The former bank across the road still has a to let sign, but the PO just do not want it. The tiny sub offices are often family-run, like the one on Horn Lane. Good and efficient service - unless you are disabled - four steepish steps with a wobbly handrail...

Does this mean that the small post offices in sweet shops will be inundated with businesses posting masses of parcels while every one else queus up behind to get their pension or buy a stamp?

What services do people actually need from a Post Office building. I think I’ve been in the branch once in the 20 years I’ve lived in Acton.

Just heard about this: On 24th October, Acton Post Office is set to close. Although Post Office Limited have reiterated their intention to find a new site to run a postal service from, as of yet, nothing has been found. As it stands, Acton town centre will be left with no post office. The impact on the local community will ultimately be immeasurable however, it will almost certainly cause significant disruption to the lives of those in the community that rely on the services that the post office provides. I've written to them on behalf of the CCA. This is what I said: I am writing as the chair of the Churchfield Community Association which represents over 200 residents and businesses in central Acton.We are  extremely concerned about the future of post office services in central Acton. We have already had one sub post office close some years ago in Churchfield Road, Now we are faced with the closure of the main Post Office in central Acton.I visited it  today and was shocked to pick up a leaflet about the closure which said that it is closing with no replacement having been found.This is clearly unacceptable to the elderly, disabled and others who rely on the PO in the centre of Acton.The leaflet states that the closure is temporary. I hope this is the case. However I understand that the current staff are leaving for other branches. We do not want this  temporary closure to become permanent.I wonder which retailers have been approached about possible partnership? There are also several empty units in Acton High Street and a brand new shopping centre is currently being built.Can you reassure our members that a suitable central  location will be found quickly? I have copied in local Councillor Sarah Rooney.

Chris, they have not found 'replacement premises' because they are not looking.  A member of staff took them months ago to suitable places along the High Street, etc (banks with counters already in place), and the perfunctory round was done, with no intention to follow anything through.  The post office would prefer to have someone open a franchise, or open a small branch within say a supermarket such as Morrison's (not happening), thereby both costing them much less.
