Received letter for invitation to this online network for neighbourhood - nextdoor.co.ukTheir reviews are not great, particular about having to providing your home address.Wondered if others have joined and any feedback about it.

I would be cautious in the way you use it. Like Facebook it is part of a global company which means it has a critical mass of data on its users to make it sellable. There was research published this week by a company called Pew which has revealed the extent to which Facebook categorises their users by traits and how accurate it was. Companies that want to find out stuff about you can combine the data from a range of these sites to learn more about you than you would like. Registering on both gives greater confidence to the data they hold on you and therefore increases its value. They are very good at picking up clues in ways you wouldn't expect, for instance asking for help finding a plumber will immediately result in them filling in more of your profile details. The golden rule is that if you aren't paying for something online you are the product not the customer so you need to think what the real cost of any free service is.

I find it useful for getting information out and updates on what is going on locally.  People who don't do Facebook or W3 use it so it widens the information catchment.The reason they ask for your home address is to make sure you are bona fide and the site is not used by non local companies or political groups etc.

Haha Rosco.I'm a member and think it's useful. I've locally got rid of a sofa and gained a desk :-)It's also useful for local tradesmen and information about your local, local area (ie, not the whole of Acton, but specifically where you live in Acton).
