Rupa Huq betrayal on second referendum

Before the election she promised that in every vote she would oppose Brexit and vote for anything tending towards remaining in the EU. Yet on Wednesday she abstained on the motion calling for a second referendum. It just shows, all remainers should have voted Lib Dem back in 2017 - we would not be in this mess now if we all had... I won't make the mistake of backing Labour again.

Petition up to nearly 4 million - seems quite a lot to me.And interestingly Ealing Central and Acton is lying at 23 out of 650 sears - with 20% having signed. (But its 20% of electorate and of course some signers might be too young or otherwise ineligible to vote) Still surprised to see us way ahead of Walthamstow for example.And I am going on my first ever march tomorrow - not taking a banner though

A confirmatory vote wouldn’t work like that. The public would be given a simple choice of Remain vs A Brexit Already Agreed by parliament. If the latter is chosen it becomes law with immediate effect. No delays. Caroline Lucas confirmed this methodology on Channel 4 News tonight.  It is an entirely fair and democratic process, where the “will of the people” is binding and I repeat, immediate.

What happens is the result of another referendum is exactly the same?Are they going to have another one after that - the best of 3 for instance?This has gone on long enough and I am sure many people are totally fed up - just get on with it for once and for all!

so if total of 2a & 2b exceeds the Remain number, which Brexit do you go for then? The problem isn't solved.  I believe there should be two options:1) Remain2) Adopt a deal that has been previously ratified / signed off by parliament. Obvs there's a way to go on this one, as the last 2+ years have demonstrated.  Ultimately, whatever parliament agrees is the best brexit deal is what should go back to the people as a confirmatory vote, and if parliament proclaims that option 2 should be "no deal", then so be it.

The People's Vote:  The ballot paper would have to have choices for the 'Leave' voters though:1) Remain2a) Leave without a deal2b) Leave on May's TermsThen the tally of 2a & 2b would have to be added together as a figure against 1.There are 'Leavers' who would rather leave without a deal & those that would prefer May's deal.

Yes, indeed! Let's get our voices heard again on Saturday. You can join the People's Vote demo from Park Lane to Westminster. They say participants can assemble from 12 for a 1 pm start (towards the Hyde Park Corner end) but even if you arrive at 2 or later, you're still fine. It is going to be massive again.If anyone has not been to a demo before/recently, the last ones were very well planned and the atmosphere really friendly, nothing to worry about.

Even if you assume that nobody has changed their mind since the first vote and that the electorate would be exactly the same (and ignore the fact that more leavers have died and more remainers have become qualified to vote) there is still no mandate to leave the EU regardless.The first vote was a binary choice but it has since become apparent that the real world doesn't work that way. Lots of people who voted leave would prefer to stay in the EU if no deal is the alternative and another section would prefer to stay in the EU if Theresa May's deal was the option. We need a second vote because we need to understand more clearly what the will of the people actually is not because we want to subvert the 'decision' of the first one.

We voted and the outcome was leave. Bottom line. NO 2ND / 3RD OR 4TH referendum/ As the bible says Matthew 5:37 New King James Version (NKJV) But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these, is from the evil one.

I think you’re being a bit hasty with your criticism.  I 100% support a second referendum but Sarah Woolaston’s timing was wrong. Hopefully we’ll end up with such a referendum but who knows what shenanigans the DUP and ERG will pull next week.

My understanding is that a large proportion of MPs who are totally supportive of the Second Referendum are waiting for the Kyle Wilson amendment to be tabled. This states that support would be given to Theresa May's deal if it was put to a referendum along with the option of remaining. Don't know if that was Rupa Huq's reason but it certainly was for many MPs and is the recommendation of the People's Vote campaign.In a rational world the Kyle/Wilson amendment would be seen to be the obvious thing to do and would be totally uncontentious.

Labour ordered its MPs to abstain, believing the timing to be wrong, and only 85 MPs voted for a referendum that would have had remain as an option.'& CNN News Source . . .UK lawmakers rejected a move to give the British public a second referendum, dealing a blow to campaigners for a so-called People's Vote.Members of Parliament voted 85 to 334 against a proposal to hold a new vote to break the deadlock in the Brexit process. The opposition Labour Party told its MPs to abstain from the vote.
