I have been browsing through the national dailies from March 1977 in the British Library to see the coverage of the Faraday documentary and it appears that the BBC Complaints Commission found the PANORAMA team guilty of concentrating on two 3rd year classes being taken by probationary teachers, and by-passing the classes that were run by more experienced teachers. However, in 1978 Angela Pope, the director, won substantial libel damages from the OBSERVER after it claimed that she had been "purposely selective in her material" and "no respecter of the truth". I wish she'd come to my Bucks grammar school and filmed some of the class of '77 ; they were every bit as bad as Faraday was shown to be. And yet, on 22 March 1977, the day after the BEST DAYS documentary, my form tutor commented, "If anything like that happens at this school, I'm off". I was too shy at that age (17) to say, "But Sir, it already is happening". Believe you me, it was - in a GRAMMAR school in Bucks!
