When I take my GSD out I am armed with nappy bags, tissues and hand sanitizer. it's not a pleasant job but you have to do it, we all know how annoying it is to walk in or push a buggy through, so it's only polite to clean up after your dog. I see plenty of people just turn their heads and walk off when their dog does it. I feel like handing them a bag and a tissue and making them clean up.

Marie, it is offence to let your dog foul the public footway. Any information concerning the addresses of the offending dog owners should be passed to the local Enviro Crime Officer in order that the offender can be called on and interviewed - and advised that if they persist with this unsocial behaviour they will be prosecuted.

But will they?Is there any history of dog foulers being hauled in front of the beak?Certainly last time this came up, no-one could recall much enforcement.

Should be dealt with by an instant fine - by authorised officer. Offender asked to pick up desposit and take away and if they don't £80 instant fine.  If they pick the waste up and put it in a bag and place it on the pavement (usually at the foot of a tree) is treated as littering, also a £80 instant fine.  All have to be witnessed by authorised officer.A good money making activity for Ealing Council down Goldsmith Avenue.

Yes. All very good. But how many authorised officers are there, and what is the chance that one of them will witness a failure to bag?Ultimately, the only way to sort this out will be compulsory DNA records. It has already been done in Israel, and the cost of such a scheme is rapidly falling.

John, all it needs is a call to the Enviro Officer (who should be authorised) with the address of the offender.  The officer says, you have been observed by residents letting your dog foul the footway, please stop else I will have to fine you £80.  This usually stops the unsocial behaviour.  Because the dog owner now knows that the Council knows where they live.

What's needed is for all those traffic wardens and such like to have it added into their job description as part of their role. If their past performance is anything to go by, they'll have had acton's streets cleansed in a thrice and a pile of money paid into the exchequer to boot!

With the income from parking fines dropping fast, no doubt those at the top in the Council are looking either to save money on that contract, else get the wardens to do other jobs.  But..... I don't think that some of the wardens may be up to it.

It is unusual that you have started this thread today because this morning I sent a report to Streetwatchers and Cllr Seema Kumar on this very same subject.My suggestion was that an immediate fine should be issued to those found permitting their dog to foul the pavement, further that people littering, responsible for grafitti and anti-social behaviour should be fined or named and shamed.The Traffic Wardens are already carrying cameras and this could be another task for them to do.The Community Police would be another suggestion instead of them just walking along two by two chatting and ignoring all the antisocial behaviour going on in the streets!  They are getting paid enough surely.I also thought this council should try and set an example for the rest of London by getting really tough on people who break the law but I wonder whether they will be bold enough to do anything about it?In Hammersmith for instance there are warning signs on lamp posts so tell litter louts that there is a fine for dropping litter in the street.Probably nothing will happen to these suggestions but Acton is once again looking rather messy I am sad to say.This is despite the efforts of streetwatchers and the council.Some charity shops have bags of donations piling up outside when they are closed and then the contents are scattered over the pavement when people have a sort through to find something interesting. Perhaps a recepticle outside these shops would encourage people to use them?Some residents obviously don't give a toss about the area in which they live and expect the rest of us to clear up after them.Recently I have seen more and more dog owners walking around without carrying any poop scoop or bag to clean up after their pet.Any ideas folks?

A huge pile materialised yesterday right outside the gate.It's so disgusting.And though the street is supposed to be swept on a Wednesday, it's still there.Do I have a moral/neighbourly duty to don the rubber gloves and go and clear it up?The prospect makes me want to vomit.On the other hand, can I just leave it? Probably not.Why do people (and their beastly dogs) behave in this inconsiderate manner?

Sara - some moron let their dog (at least I assume it was a dog although the amount would indicate that it came from a bear) foul right outside our office door the other day.  I notified the Council and they sent somebody to  clear it up within the hour.  It's quite disgusting I agree and I really pity the poor person that had to carry out such a revolting task, but nonetheless it's probably worth the phone call.

Some of you are saying that it is an offence to allow our dogs to foul the public footpaths, I agree with that, but as we all know, when you've got to go....you've got to go. If my dog needs to go, how am I meant to stop her going?? I do clean up after her, unlike some other dog owners I have seen recently, so by cleaning up after her, am I still breaking the law by letting her go...or do I have to get a cork ready when I take her for a walk?

I think it's not clearing it up that constitutes the offence - the law says that if the dog fouls and the person in charge of the dog doesn't clear it up, then the person has committed an offence.

You could steer the dog towards the gutter and then clear it up - but I agree, as long as it IS cleared up, I am relaxed about it.

Thankyou, now I know I am not breaking any laws. I do try and steer her into the side of the road but it's tricky once she's started going!! I definately clean up after her though.

Just wanted to comment on the other thread about dog poo as well, regarding bins for dog poo on the street.I have walked home may times with a bag of poo in my hand to deposit in the bin at home, fortunately it is usually able to be flushed down the toilet (not the bag but it's contents). It would be helpful to have doggy bins on the streets, or are we allowed to deposit our bags in a normal street bin, always wondered about that one. Also, what if our doggies have a bad stomach and the resulting poo is not able to be picked up. My dog never had that problem, but I have seen some disgusting sights and wondered what they must be feeding their dog!

Dog waste has to be treated and disposed of differently if placed in specific dog bin.  It is an expensive process.  The Council will therefore resist putting in dog bins. Mixed in with other litter bin waste, it is not a problem.Where are you walking your dog? To the park?  There are plenty of bins there you could use.  Else you need to put it in your own personal dustbin.

The poo outside my gate was cleared - and not by me -- so thanks to whoever did it whether public-spirited neighbour or Ealing cleaner person.
