Wasn't this part of Horn Lane listed as one of the most polluted spots in London in a report in the last couple of years?  I'm amazed that Planning would compound that by increasing the activity at one of the key drivers for that inclusion!

Paul, you are right.  Everyone who is concerned about this needs to object to this planning application.  And the wind from this site blows right over Poets Corner !!  My understanding is that it is the very small pollutants which come from this site which are the most dangerous.

What tells on me is that that with all the election litter coming through the letter box, no one, just no one, says that they will listen to the residents views about planning development and architectural style etc etc.I hope this absence will influence how readers vote.However you may not wish to continue with the politics, and perhaps rightly, but just discuss the impact of the planning.Hate it or not, you cannot be too far from from how politicians, many undemocratic and non representative, change our lives. I have said my bit.

John, you know as well as I that there is 'dust' which gives you cancer and 'dust' which does not.  I am afraid it is the 'dust' that does, which emanates from this site (very small particles which the lungs cannot deal with), which in turn blows down the hill across Goldsmith Avenue towards Poets Corner.  Can't you smell the biscuits???That is why it is the 2nd most polluting site in the whole of London which needs to be re-located in a less person populated area.It would be interesting to see the figures concerning the level of lung related illnesses in Acton.

I sent an email to Cllr Seema Kumar asking her to read the comments on this forum regarding the proposed planning application.This site should NEVER have been located so close to a densly populated area.I am sure that many residents with heart and respiratory problems live in close proximity, and if the Planning Depart had any sense they would not have allowed it on this site in the first place let alone consider expanding production!No one seems to care really.

Regardless of the respiratory effects - the grime and noise that comes from that site (along with the cement works) make it completely unsuitable for the area. In reality though I would not be worried about this site if I lived in Poets corner. I know the wind blows the dust around near the site where it really is an issue.

There's only so many subjects one can campaign on at once - but given the imminenence of the election and the huge enthusiasm of Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for ISSUES (qv housing thread by a PPC I've never heard of) on which they can win some attention/coverage/votes...why not try a couple of them.This sounds a shoo-in for the Green or the Lib-Dem. But I don't know who they are.

I knew the area was bad, however it's actually horrific!How many young children, older people, those with chest problems, all of us really, are having their lives shortened by all this filth?It's incredible that not only have these polluting businesses been allowed to remain in a densely populated area for so long but also allowed to expand.The dirty air is bad enough, but what about the CONSTANT banging and crashing with the incessant "Bleep, Bleep" all day long of the forklifts??!!Write/eMail and COMPLAIN people about this Air & Noise Pollution to the Council, the Dept of Environment and Network Rail (who own the land).

Closing down, we should be so lucky!I searched EalingW5 as well and couldn't find any reference at all to their Good Riddance.I'm still completely mystified as to why all these filthy, polluting industries are allowed to continue operating in a heavily residential area, despite their long proven ill effects on health.Could money be changing hands? Or holidays and other such favours?Just call me old fashioned.

Rosco, it is a question of what people don't see doesn't bother them.  If the miniscule dangerous particles were orange in colour and easily visible things would be different.Are you able to post a plan of the site in question - as I am sure most people are not aware of its size and location?

Ah, the joys of living next to the railway. Rosco's right. The 'beep, beep, beep' is all day, some days - quite unbelievable. Tell you what else I've noticed - fires so big you can see the flames from the junction of Horn Lane and Friary Road. Of course, you can smell the smoke, too. Is that legal? I don't know. What I do know is that Network Rail land seems to be used for businesses that don't seem to give a sh*t about local residents. Harry's Cafe is another example. It serves as a Council amenity for trucks across West London and the whole country. Yet despite Friary Road bordering the railway, it is a narrow, residential road with no parking - only single and double yellow lines. So don't forget you down there in Poet's Corner - send your unwanted traffic wardens up here - we desperately need them.

Most of the local denizens are sleepwalking whilst there has been loads of expansion and noise & air pollution "creep" on this filthy railway land - many of these industries now start as early as 7:00 am and earlier, with seeming impunity.I don't know how to post a map of the railway land to this thread Dee, however if someone can explain to me I will do so.And regarding the fires Hayes, I heard about these and it's lucky I was not around at the time because the Fire Brigade should, and would, have been called immediately. I'm not sure therefore who the company was lighting the fires Ana/Sara, but could make a fairly accurate, educated guess.And thank you Jacqui, there may be some common objection points that can be utilised from the report.There's no doubt that these railway owned yards are an utter blight and supreme health hazard.

The fires are frequently at Horn Lane Metals, probably burning off unwanted materials from the scrap metal, no doubt this is not legal as the smoke will contain all manner of toxic chemicals from the insulation/coatings etc.

Can anyone else hear the NOISE from these yards, since this morning, and every day? What an appalling din for the residents to have to constantly put up with.These firms are lucky that most people leave for work early and are completely unaware of the daily clamour.Without mentioning the proven air pollution.

Forum members might like to contact Planning Department & Regulatory Services (new title for Environmental Health) to see what action can be taken with regard to this induatrial site.Surely they should consider the views of residents and the fact that we are very concerned about the current situation and even more worried about their plans for expansion.My email has already been forwarded to the above.

Yes we could here it - smashing and clanging from the skip yard as the trucks turned in/out of the yard. The squeaking from the cement works (Hanson?) was incredibly annoying - especially when they were working during the weekends - I'm not sure if they were meant to. Not what you need at 8 am when you're looking forward to a lie in. I went to complain once and was told that they new about the noise and had tried to fix to no avail. We've moved out the area now to buy a place (too expensive in Acton!) and I don't miss those factories at all!

Thanks for the link - I filled out the form. Did anyone see the air ambulance land this evening? I saw it go down over the rail bridge, went to have a look and it had settled in the car park, next to Acton Mainline station. Apparently, a man's chest was crushed - in this site. That's all I know (and it was heresay)- perhaps something is on Google.

The whole yard is now closed and cordoned off, guarded by a policeman, and pending a visit by Health & Safety authorities. Goodbye Gowing & Pursey????

It's unacceptable that to get any action from the authorities it usually takes a death to spur them into doing something. My thoughts go out to the mans family, it is absolutely dreadful for them.As Mr Patel has said on the other thread, this was, very unfortunately, an accident waiting to happen. The site looks a very dangerous place to work in, but of course we don't know the full facts yet.Apparently work accidents fall within the remit of the Health and Safety Executive, although I would hope that the Council's H & S will also take notice and get involved.I also hope that the mans death is not in vain and that radical changes will now occur not only within this site, but also across the whole dangerous & polluting Horn Lane Rail Yards, for the better.

Can I urge all those concerned about the goings on on this site to make their views known to their local Councillors and Ealing Council's Environmental Health/Health & Safety Departments asap.These could be concerning noise/air pollution/traffic flows/health and safety.This is the 2nd most polluting site in the whole of London.

Considering his obvious concern about safety, perhaps Michael Hughes, Gowing and Pursey's spokesman, could also promise to ban its skip lorries from parking, reversing and 3-point turning all over Friary Road, The Drive and Friary Park Estate, so its drivers can use the cafe not 30 seconds walk from its depot.
