Another shop closes.

I see that the "Variety Store" is closing after 30 years in the High Road. It is a pity as Victor sold a good supply of nets as well as other goods. I for one shall miss him.

Also gone as from last Monday is Norwesco Tyres at East Acton. Had been trading there for many years.But i see a pattern.... i think.....A lot of businesses close down in March ahead of the new business rates coming into effect in April.....They are killing the small businessman......The ratable value of our premises last year was £12,950 per annum......This year it is £23,000 !!!'Sigh'

Roger, they sold out to another company that have branches elsewhere. Martin,the previous owner of Norwesco (that was) is setting up a mobile tyre fitting service soon to be up and running i believe.

So it's not so much closed - ie out of business - as sold to someone who thinks they can make a go of it - I don't see that as the source of so much concern really - we are not being left with an empty hole and a diminished economic vibrancy...in fact if Martin is going mobile, you could argue that there are additional services and businesses which is a positively good thing.It's closedowns leaving empty shops that really worry me.

Sandy was trying to sell it by auction - maybe easier unfilled.And Jeremy's shop on the corner could be filled by a chemist if only Ealing PCT would get their finger out and approve it. Did you know that anyone wanting to set up a chaemist shop has to be approved by the local PCT - who won't if competing pharmacists say it might hurt them? talk about restraint of trade!

Had thought about it but running one business is enough at the moment....and at my age?......setting up again ?....No thanks. I'm trying to slow down in life not rev up....but who knows, i'm not one for letting the grass grow under my feet.As for my 'hobby'......I'm a fair weather trader....:)Sorry the link failed to work...did for me.

The building did not reach the reserve at auction, but I believe it has just sold, though the occupants know nothing.
