Reasons to be Cheerfull?

I think it was Part three according to Iain DruryThis forum is oft filled with 'issues, whinges and complaints'Valid and important no doubt but depressing.As spring is sprung and the clocks change this weekend can I make a plea for some positive posts?My contribution:Masses of Daffodils on the verge close to Chessington World of AdventureGood service from insurer and garage on car body work claimInstallation of water meter by Thames Water inside 30 days of their 60 day target.LBE performing well on refuse/recycling for me in Acton ValeAll fairly minor I know but in the news and on this site we generally see the negativesWhat has made you feel good today?Iain

My perfect temperature at the moment. I love early spring/late autumn. The blackbird that takes grated cheese from the window sill so will nest nearby.Cycling to work through Bedford Park/Acton Park with buds a-budding.Morning hot choc from L'Oriental.Meeting lovely new people through making more time for art.

The baskets in Churchfield Road are blooming....the blossom is out everywhere...the daffs are glowing in the churchyard and at the Oaks...the sun is shining...there's an election in the offing (old habits die hard!)

Watching my good lady mow the lawn, whilst relaxing on a new rattan chair having a cuppa, smoke and doing the Standard back page crossword, in the warm sunshine of course.

I am perfectly willing to permit her to do my lawn too!  And if she fancies a bit of a rummage in the flower bed she will find a large baguette for her troubles which a squirrel carried along the fence today,  balancing it carefully in his mouth, before lunging into a tree and hiding said baguette which was nearly as big as him!  Did make me chuckle this morning.

She is a good lass, not good enough to take on extra work and buy me some new golf clubs though. Apparently two jobs are more than enough for her.Anyway, reasons to be cheerful: the quiet read of the newspapers in the Sunday morning sunshine before the rest of the household get up.

I went to see Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing at The Old Vic last night, with friends. That was wonderfully cheering. I saw it last in 1999 and it has aged well.The garden make over is doing well and the sun has come out again, even if it is chilly out there.I must get back to work but thank you for making me think of things to smile about.

I went on Saturday and thought it jolly good (preferred Roger Rees and Felicity Kendall as the leads though) The cricket bat speech and the Desert Island Discs dilemma were the memorable bits didn't you think?

I loved the original version with Roger Rees and Felicity Kendall. I also adored her with Rufus Sewell, Harriet Walters, Sam West and Bill Nighy in Stoppard's Arcadia; a great play with a great cast. We saw it again recently. I saw a version of The Real Thing at Questors too; that was around the time Tom Stoppard and Felicity Kendal moved in together. The play was prophetic. Stoppard was interviewed yesterday in The Guardian; very interesting.Do you recall Roy Plomley, the original presenter of Desert Island Discs, saying that people would add a classical record to their list of otherwise low-brow or popular records? He would take them out for a drink and get them to confess that a brother-in-law or someone had suggested that they would look like Philistines if they didn't have something serious.

Yes I much preferred the original Arcadia cast (and production)Didn't Stoppard write Real Thing because he was criticised for not doing romance?

He was thought to be too intellectual. I like that element. (Ackbourn is funny but has little substance.) Rock & Roll didn't quite work for me, despite having Rufus Sewell in it.

I enjoyd R & R but I know many who didn't - and it wasn't his best. My goodness we are Stoppard super-groupies, you and I.OK serious Stoppardian trivia: Did you know one of the original cast of R & G are dead went on to become the Financial Services Ombudsman? No, I thought not!

When I studied drama, I went to the theatre three times a week and said I was working. It was wonderful. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead was one of my A level texts.
