Landfill bans suggested for aluminium, food waste and more

Only if the Council came when they said they woukd and actually collected the recycling.We were missed for no reason this week - I had filled two green food boxes (mega spring clean) and have been forced to throw into the mixed general rubbish the detritufrom chicked soup for 30 because the beastly recyclers arbitrarily left us out and the retrieval then doesn't happen till Monday.If I were to be punished for that, I would be even more livid than I already am. So no it can't be introduced until all councils have their acts together so that all the stuff from flats and blocks and houses is reliably picked up every week.

How irritating.  I've always been lucky - touch wood. We don't make enough food waste so we get the flexibility of being able to go two weeks without a problem - but then we don't entertain like you either.Yes, the food waste is the big problem when it isn't collected as there is nowhere to take that without it becoming general rubbish.  I suppose the only alternative lies with the bokashi bin or green cone or green johanna (whichever takes bones and meat). we already recycle all these things. My service has been quite good but I really wish the recycle guys would not throw back the bins/bags so violently. The other week my food bin came back with a great big hole in it which of course renders it useless!

At least our flats are getting some kind of service now, and they have moved from having a pile of unsightly bags (which sat there all week and encouraged fly-tipping from passers-by) to actually providing us with our own recycling bin.But I don't think they have any plans for food waste yet, so sadly we can't do this.

Gill, Is this a recycling bin to take the see-through bags of mixed recycling available to flats?  Or bins to take separated separated recycling.

Hi PhilippaIt's a big bin to take the see-through bags.Our flats are 'managed' so the cleaner collects rubbish bags from outside our front doors.  Recently she's also been collecting the see-through bags and taking them to the separate bin.Seems to be a good system.

Sounds great.  You can recycle a lot more I think if you have the see-through flats recycling system.Now you just need a gardener who is interested in zero waste and a bit of garden to sort out the food waste. I see from Around Ealing that LBE has reduced price composters and water butts.  LBH has reduced price wormeries as well as composters - shame LBE doesn't do those as well as I think they are more interesting to feed your bank statements to!

The Ealing Council website have a section for reporting missed recycling, not sure if it still does, but I remember using it once before and they send a crew who are nearest a day or two later so you don't have to wait a whole week.You can also request new food bins/boxes.http://www.ealing.gov.uk/atoz.jsp?q=r
