Third runway

Despite the court ruling, Labour, if re-elected, could go ahead with the third runway.Does anyone know if the Labour PPC has said anything on the runway?  When I wrote to him about it and a few other things, he did not say anything at all about it.  That may answer my question, but I am just curious to find out it anyone else has heard anything.

Unless he's done a U-turn in the last year, Bassam Mahfouz has declared himself as strongly opposed to the third runway.  He introduced a debate on the subject at Ealing Council on 3 Feb 2009 at which the council voted unanimously to redouble its opposition to Heathrow expansion.What he said then was unequivocal:"We are sending a clear message to the government that we will not stand for a Third Runway and other concessions granted to BAA’s proposals.The decision to expand Heathrow further, creating new flight paths, will have a detrimental impact on the lives to many residents across the borough and the message they have given to me as their Parliamentary candidate is that enough is enough. That’s a message I want to make sure is loud and clear to the national government.Residents in Ealing & Acton know that they have a candidate who will stand up for their concerns – no matter which party is in power."

Well, he would, wouldn't he? Had he stood in favour of R3, he would have stood no chance of re-election. So he has no choice but to pay lip service to the anti-expansion cause. But will he resign and fight against R3? Don't make us laugh.

John McDonnell (Labour MP for Hayes & Harlington) has shown that it's perfectly possible to remain as a Labour MP while campaigning vigorously against this particular party policy.

Andy Slaughter, MP for my bit of Acton resigned as a PPS (or similar) over the third runway. So don't be so cynical!
