As Ben says, 54 MBits/sec is the maximum theoretical data rate of the wireless connection between your PC and your modem. In practice it may be much less, depending on how far you are from the modem, and how much your neighbour's link interferes.Convention says small b for bits, capital B for bytes, although many publications get it wrong.Your Internet download data rate is also limited by the connection between your modem and ISP. An "up to 8 MBits/sec" will be full rate if you are lucky enough to live close to the exchange, but otherwise may be considerably less. To find your actual rate, check out www.speedtest.net.Your ISP will put a limit on maximum size of e-mails (check the FAQ), as will the recipient's ISP. If e-mails are returned with a "mail delivery failed" message, it's probably a recipient problem.Because of the way that e-mails are encoded, a 10 MByte attachment creates an e-mail that's a little over 13 MBytes in size. As Ben also says, your upload speed for sending e-mails will be much less than your download speed. At an upload speed of 300 kbits/sec, a 10 MByte attachment will take 13x8/0.3 seconds, which is almost 6 minutes, to send. If you hit send, and turn off the PC without waiting for the upload to finish, you may have problems.
