Be Alert - Cable Thief About!

Last night at about 10pm  we tried to authorise a credit card in the restaurant only to find our 2 lines were both dead. I remember we'd had a delivery order at about 9.30pm so something had happened between then and 10pm. We called BT, they said the line was showing as disconnected and would send an engineer next day.Well, it seems we werent the only ones affected. The whole block, businesses and flats above, lost phone lines, cable TV and broadband. BT had us back online again by 4pm. The fault - someone had stolen the cabling from the roof!! I've heard of theives pinching lead from the roof but phone cabling? Madness!

I've heard of this before. The cables are stripped for the copper, which is valuable. I seem to remember reading of large bundles of wires and cables vanishing from the street boxes if they're left unlocked.

My husband works does some work for Newcastle building society and last couple of days he has been in locally some polish ex squats one being the house they filmed Morse and another next to Carnarvon hotel these had been stripped and all cables and copper stripped and even fireplaces ripped out they are even printing squatter notices up via Internet He was in the duke of york yesterday after work and one polish guy came in from the horn land squat and asked to use bathroom for washing so we presume the house has been cleared of cables and copper already these are peoples houses its a joke the British system seems powerless

Metal prices are going up all the time until december. PVC copper is now at least £1100 a ton, brass - twice as much so watch ya front door fittings aswell as ya phone line.
