Cat collars

I have a cat aged 8 months or so and he now goes outside.  We bought one of those collars for him that are elasticated so it doesn't choke him should he get it caught on something.  However, it was so effective he came home without it after only wearing it for a couple of days.  Same happened again with the next one. He's been "chipped" but we wanted a collar and with an ID disc for him to wear.  Does anyone have suggestions about what's the best kind of collar for a cat to wear?  One that won't get lost so frequently!Thanks.

He may be pulling it off with his paw. If you fasten it too loose, he could get his front leg hooked through it and be unable to walk all day! It's also more likely to get caught on twigs, etc. Once he gets used to wearing one, it should stay put.

a lot of cats really hate wearing a collar so don't be surprised if he always finds a way to remove his collar

Thanks to you both for your thoughts and suggestions.  Not really sure what to do now.  I suppose we could keep trying him with the collar, minus the expensive ID tags until we're sure he'll wear them.  I stayed up until 3am a few nights ago because he decided to go out on the town rather be home by 9pm as usual!  He's had a good talking to.  We'll see if he listens.  I care too much, obviously!
