Power surges

I am talking electrically, not electorally! Have experienced a couple of dips in power this evening - seemed to affect the lights, oven and Internet router but not much else (tv and computer have stayed on) - anyone else experienced them today?

Yes.Noticed a dip in my kitchen approx 15 minutes ago. Big enough to make me jump.

Southern Electric reporting "a fault on the main network" affecting Acton and Park Royal - first reported at 19:37 according to the recorded message, they expect customers to be back on supply (if anyone has lost power) within the next two to three hours.We haven't lost power entirely this evening (yet!) - just minor dips as I reported.

Make sure you keep them away from curtains etc! Incidentally, if anyone does lose supply, 08457 70 80 90 is the number for Southern Eleectric's emergency line.

I did leave the fridge door open a couple of times tonight, I don't know if that would do it.It does feel like someone is doing it for a laugh, I am glad I have my wind up bike lights and radio.

had a huge power surge the other day as well, so bad it wiped my sons harddrive and he lost 3 chapters of a novel he has been writing, he's only 15 and devastated.

A power surge can't erase a complete drive, but it might corrupt some files and (worse) the file index table. If the three chapters were in separate files, he has a good chance of recovering the first two.This would be a good time to emphasise the importance of backups, as the message is more likely to be heard.

Ian, I know, I should have backed them up. As soon as it happenned I connected the drive to my pc and it showed as being unformatted, so I tried to reformat and reinstall the OS but the harddrive was damaged and would not install.he now has a new ahrddrive, a surge protector and a usb flash drive to make backups everyday.
