My car broken into last night - Newton Ave

Just thought I would let everyone know to be vigilant as it seems there are a few desperate people around again.  My little Golf, 10 years old already was broken into last night. They got in at the passenger door and basically just threw everything that was in the car all around.  I would never leave anything valuable in the car.  The only stuff of value was my baby seat and buggy that was in the boot.  I think they got off with about 2 pounds worth of change which was in the glove compartement. I am afraid that it looks like the door handle is a bit dodgy now.  I would not even consider claiming as it would raise my insurance.  Just so annoying!  So beware, the nasties are out there.

A few weeks ago, around 3/4.00 am, I spotted a tallish, slim, hooded individual, walking at speed, in the road, (not Newton Ave) trying every car door as he walked past. Knowing the time it would have taken for a police response to a non emergency crime that may or may not be about to take place, this hooded individual would have been long gone.He found a van driver side door unlocked, rummaged around for about 10 seconds, came out with something, and was off.

This type of crime is being targetted by the police in our area. Please do call them if you see it happening. They responded very promptly in the past when I have phoned.

I agree, everyone should be involved to make the community safer and everyone should keep their eyes open all day, the smallest detail could help with the robberies and drug dealers.  The last time I caught a youth on a bike trying to steal something from a car the police where here in less than 6 mins.  The community officers are also around and very good so let them know if you see anything suspect.

Fred, It is impossible to presume the volume of calls the police receive at any one time on a borough but to just presume that they will not be able to attend to your phone call the second you hang up is unfair. When there is a 'suspect on' call, as is what you had below, it is pushed very high up on the 'to urgently attend' list and the person you noticed may have made a victim out of many.

My post was more of a warning to remind people to lock their car doors and hide valuables.The person I saw wasn't smashing car windows or damaging door locks. He was simply taking a chance on easy pickings. Don't make his job easy.

Your post sounded more like he was trying to commit crime, hence my suggestion to call the police to prevent him from gaining access to the car that he did manage to do so. A potential suspect will have their details checked by the police and it will alert them to keep an eye out for him.

My call would not have prevented the crime. This guy would have been off before the police picked up the phone.Hello police .... a description?,  yes, he was wearing a hooded garment.  He disappeared from view a few minutes ago.  No, officer I couldn't see his face.

I keep my camera in the kitchen now and have taken pics before and the police were very happy to get any evidence even just of their bikes or clothes, it is up to all of us to keep our children and our neighbourhoods safe.
