Goldsmith Avenue, RATS

My husband informs me that in the front garden of number 19 he observed rats in broad daylight yesterday.  Not one, but a considerable number.   Those living near by may be concerned.Does anyone know if those at number 19 are dealing with this problem and having the matter dealt with?    Else it will spread rapidly to nearby properties.

I doubt if the occupants have reported it if they are running around. yOu could report it yourself.

Mavis, reporting it to the Council will result in the Council suggesting that their rodent exterminator can come out at a cost - see below - the property looks as though it is rented out to uncaring tenants (the frontage is strewn with rubbish) - what is needed is for nearby residents to complain to Environmental Health that their neighbours are causing problem and they will come out and assess the situation - as I do not live close to the offending property - there is nothing I can do but appeal to those closer to the 'problem' to complain to Environmental Health.But I can give some free obvious advice to the tenants/owners:  clean up your frontage/and the interior of the property - put all your external rubbish into bins with tight fitting lids.  Put all food in the house into containers which cannot be accessed by rodents. All food spillages internal/external to be cleaned up immediately. you could go and talk to them, or put something through their letter box, it would be more constructive than ranting on here about it

If you or your husband has seen rats then I would think a call to the envirocrime officer is in order.I would feel odd calling him and saying someone else's husband says they have seen a rat - or many rats.I think that house is the rather scruffy house share where they don't tend to secure the rubbish at all. But I have been round a few times to ask them to deal with it and there's never anyone in when I call.

Jeremy, I do not 'rant'.  I do not live near the house, although I have alerted the local Enviro Crime officer and emailed Environmental Health.....but unless the owner/tenants are prepared to spend some money and/or deal with the way in which they deal with their waste.  Nothing will be done.I was alerting those who live near by that they may have a problem which they do not know about.

Oh great, I just finished ridding my house of mice, now there's rats nearby. I've already got an ants nest inside my bedroom window frame! and what about the sudden invasion of greenfly, couldn't walk across the level crossing yesterday without being dive-bombed by them! Gardeners beware!

The council will do something as these rats spread disease etc, they will bill the owner of the house and probably check the hiuse to see if they comply with all the regs going on. I think £100 for mice is a rip off, they just lay poison which as the mice eat small amounts it takes longer.When I had an mice in my shed I use peanut butter on a trap and caught seven within the week it was much easier than poison. The little gits chewed  through my new lawn mower lead and I still have not repaired that yet.The equivalent of Aggie and Kim should visit my garden to get rid of the long grass and dandelions!
