RMT Tube Strike

Just read about the proposed tube strikes. I cannot believe that they have the cheak to go on strike and hold Londoners to ransom again. The drivers earn far more that the average Londoner and think they can do what they want.

"The drivers earn far more that the average Londoner and think they can do what they want."This strike is of Tube Lines staff who maintain the infrastructure of the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines.  It does not involve TfL drivers or station staff.  It remains to be seen what impact it will have on tube train services.  TfL say that they "expect services to continue operating".

A little off piste, am I missing something with the Jubilee line. I hear that much of the nightly work is carried out because our tube system is so old. Yet our newest, brightest, swishest tube line has been closed every weekend for months now. To do what, its brand new?!

The Jubilee line has been shut down to introduce a new automatic train system which will increase train capacity to  32 trains per hour...unfortunately london underground has a single track system unlike most other later versions in other countries which have a two track system enabling them to carry out maintenance work whilst keeping the other track opened. As concerns the strike it ceases to amaze me that people always refer to tube drivers striking when there has been no tube driver strikes in at least seven years...and also people moan about people going on strike on lu or bt or britrish airways yet bt execs took a 6% pay rise on top of there million pound salary and tubeline are taking over 300 million pounds of taxpayers money as a golden goodbye...i agree we wshould all share the pain of what is to come in the way of cuts but that should include everybody including the fat cats

Right on, comrade! But that does not justify the havoc, cost and disruption this causes to the capital. If Bob Crowe got off his high-horse about "elf'n'safety' of his members" - pull the other one - and just negotiated he might even gain some respect! Striking is pathetic! If I went on strike I'd go out of business about 5 days later. Whether it's the employers or the unions, everyone must realise employment terms and remuneration must be 'fair' all round. By all means, shoot a few 'fat cats' to focus their minds, but holding the city and it's workers to ransom is no way to run a railway!

"unfortunately london underground has a single track system unlike most other later versions in other countries which have a two track system enabling them to carry out maintenance work whilst keeping the other track opened."I know about New York, but which other countries/cities did you have in mind?  I would be surprised if it was most of them."there has been no tube driver strikes in at least seven years..."Not true.  For example, there were certainly strikes of drivers on the Victoria Line in April 2009 and on the Bakerloo Line in July 2007, two examples taken from the RMT website.
