racing pigeons

Got home yesterday to find a racing pigeon  resting my garden. After putting on my sherlock holmes hat have managed to trace the owner to north london! Apparently this very tame bird was on his way back from france. Hopefully he will fly home in the next few days other wise the owner will collect. Am amazed at how tame these birds are and look forward to reuniting him with his owner. Have always had a phobia of pigeons but no longer! Needless to say the owner was relieved to find out where he was as he let 5 off and so far only 3 have managed to return. My good deed for the day. Have spent the last 2 days out in the garden and ensuring he is ok and putting him in my garage at night to protect him from foxes.

Presumably they all got lost in the very bad rain storms which have been raging over central/southern France. Were they in a race?

yes. The owner informed me he released 5 pigeons at the weekend somewhere in france and so far only 3 have returned home. he is happy number 4 has been found and will be collecting him tomorrow. he is only about 15 miles from home and so has done well to get so far. Am sure he is happy pottering around in my garden and eating me out of rice!

A couple of years ago I was on a small cruise ship visiting Norway, then the Scottish Islands. Half way up the north sea a racing pigeon landed on board. He declined to disembark in Norway and waited until we got to Shetland a couple of days later...But he didn't let anyone get close enough for us to take his details. Someone on board said that if he did get home his owner wouldn't have been best pleased at the length of time he'd been away - your pigeon's owner sounds far more understanding!

Ok I know I am going to regret asking.... but how were you able to distinguish it from a normal pigeon?  Was it wearing running/flying shorts?

He was very tame, completely ignored my dog! he did have rings on his ankles (do pigeons have ankles?) So after a bit of investigation on the internet managed to find the club that the owner belonged to. They were able to put me in touch with the owner who collected him at the weekend. So he spent a lovely time pottering around in my garden, eating me out of rice and being tucked up in my garage to keep him safe from foxes! have learnt so much about racing pigeons i am amazed at these birds.
