Broken external hard drive

Our daughter broke our external hard drive with all our music, personal docs etc. Does anyone know anywhere locally that might be able to recover the data/fix it? Thanks Jo

It may be the hard drive case that is broken rather than the hard drive disk inside and if it has been dropped then cabling between the case and disk may have become disconnected. It may be worth taking the disk out of the case and testing it with a new case.

I've used DiskLabs, but it's not cheap - a 500GB recovery cost me over £300....www.DiskLabsDataRecovery.co.ukHowever, that was for a catastrophic platter failure (disk heads crashed into the hard drive disk) which required a lot of work.If it's a problem with the power supply or connectors it should be a lot cheaper and it's sometimes worth just trying an alternative enclosure - if you have no idea what we're talking about, speak to an expert :)Ian

Perhaps not relevant to Josephine's problem, but Maplin sell a hard drive docking station for £40. You can plug in any 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA drive, and access the contents via USB.Useful for checking that drives are working, or turning a spare drive into an external one.

I don't think Malcolm's is there anymore, I think it has turned into the Fishing Shop, they were very helpful, I'm not sure about Acton Computers on the High Street, but it doesn't cost to ask, plus the shop in the Oaks that sells games and phones etc. I bet they could fix a hard drive or let you know who could.

Apologies for the delay. It is often just the power supply that fails. I can check it for you if it has not already been checked, identify the problem, and replacements are available from Park Royal if needed.
