"but don't understand why there isn't one by every tube station - or any along Whitehall."Um, as I understand it mainline stations are expressly excluded since the demand would outstrip supply, in favour of sites within a short walk of the station, thus encouraging people to stick to the Tube.They're best seen as an alternative to a short bus, taxi or tube trip in the centre of town when you need to be in two places on the same day, rather than part of a commute.Personally I can't think of much reason I'd use one, to be honest, if I'm up town I'm probably going to a pub, and I'd prefer to be on a pavement than wobbling about on London's roads after a couple of pints. £45 a year implies you'd use it a bit under once a week, and I just don't go into town that often. If the £1 occasional use daily charge counted towards your Oyster cap that might make the difference, mind you, but it doesn't.
