reading the forum from afar
I've been away from Acton for almost a year now and still reading - intermittently - this forum. It's an excellent way to keep in touch with what's going on, hear some familiar voices and feel part of the community from afar. So much seems to have happened in Churchfield Road (hey, I've given up on the High Street though, fingers crossed, Town Hall re-development looks promising?) . While I was certainly in Acton when Vanilla closed, and only just here for the opening of Angela Malik's, I've missed Lavelli's and the Village Trading Centre, and the closing down of Silver Cloud. I like to see how The Rocket is doing since I was the first one to book the upstairs room for writing workshops and Book Club (and a bit later the comedy nights). They hadn't planned to use it so soon, but I had customers waiting so they painted it overnight! People here - (I now live near Trieste in Italy) often ask me 'what's it like living in London?' The city really does have the fame of being beautiful and exciting. But I can only tell them about Acton. And that's a mixed bag really, isn't it, just like the posts on this forum. Good stuff and bad stuff (like the time I was walking home from school with my 2 kids and a guy with a gun was coming towards us..and empty shops and shit on the pavements and scary dogs on the loose in Acton Park). But the best thing about Acton has always been the 'village feel' - not in the twee garden scones and cricket sense of the word - but in the sense of a lively mixed community of people with massively different experience, skills and opinions all getting together and banging on about whatever interests them. That's what I miss...there's always someone to agree with/ disagree with and who can tell you exactly what you need to know about the most obscure topics.I love living here but I have a feeling the longer I stay, the more I'll miss these conversations.
