I worked at the BBC Costume Store in the Victoria Road from 2002-2007, at which point the business was closed, the costumes sold off, and the staff of 40 made suddenly redundant. Funny that the building is only being demolished now when one of the reasons (we were told) for closing was that the building was being sold out from under us, guess it took them longer than they thought to find a buyer! As to the building having been not 'properly used' for a while, I accept that it was never ideal as a costume store (the rooms were originally rehearsal spaces after all), but during my years there we churned out some fabulous frocks, from Marie Antoinette to Soccer AM, we saw them all come through our doors, and I miss the people, the sequins and the joy that can be had in a job you love, even when trapped within the walls of a pebble-dashed 5 storey carbuncle on the wrong side of the A40...I hope that Berkeley Homes really will use the 'Costume Store' name for the new student accommodation, and that maybe a few of the new inhabitants will wonder where it came from.
