Where I work in South London, the pavements have all been re-paved with some kind of stone that creates ice-rink style slipperyness in the wet. Many a time have I nearly lost my legs on the way to work, or found the buggy I'm pushing to be nearly aqua-planing towards the road, I really don't know why the council chose it! It also shows the assorted London dirt and grime up really well...So sorry to hear about your poor nose, I wish you a speedy recovery!
