What would you do if you received a message via Facebook saying that you had inherited $12,5 million from a person who had been killed in a car crash in Togo along with all his family and this 'Barrister, had traced you as the solitary heir.

No it's true, This 'barrister' wants me to contact him on his private e-mail address. He gave the name of the dead relative as a Mr B A Hughes and said that he had lived in Togo for about 6 years. Well I,ve got no relatives like that so I asked him who was BA Hughes' father? He said that I might not know of the relative yet he had done his research and was sure that I was the the heir.

if he is real, then the Bar Council will have him on their records - also probably you can find him on line - all the reputable chambers are. You could do some basic checks.Sounds vanishingly unlikely though. I'd have deleted it by now

It's your call Dave but I'd be very wary.Wouldn't surprise me if they ask for some money up front or for some of your personal details.I'd be tempted to set up another email account if I were you if you are going to go ahead with this and do it through that but I am no expert on these matters.Tread carefully hombre.

He will want an "administration fee" up front. When you send that, he'll suddenly discover that more money is required. when you stop paying, he'll disappear off the face of the earth

You could reply saying that thanks to his email your subsequent research has revealed that the deceased family actually owned a far greater fortune elsewhere and you are eternally grateful to him, and that should he wish to meet you in the foyer of 250 High Street Acton then you could advise him of all the charitable donations you are preparing to make.Of course you would use a different email and send it from a computer café. Dave,It may be good form to flag this up with Facebook to let them know their punters are being targeted this way.May not help but you would be doing all you can to stop this,if that's possible.

Definitely press the "report as spam" button on Facebook.  It is a scam and there is one born every minute, but hopefully you will prevent someone from being suckered into providing their bank details.
