Distraction Burglars - don't let them in
Residents, this month has seen two distraction burglaries take place on the ward. This is unusual and on both occasions elderly residents were targeted. Those responsible have attended houses on the pretence of 'carrying out work’ and once inside have stolen items - often cash and jewelry LOCK: Keep you front and back doors locked even when home.STOP: Before you answer, stop and think if you are expecting anyone. Look thorough the spy hole or window to see who it is.CHAIN: If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first.CHECK: If someone who looks official calls at your door always ask for ID and check the details on the card to verify (directory enquiries, ring the company etc). Burglars often use props such as overalls or uniform to fool residents. If you have any doubts KEEP THEM OUT!If you think a bogus caller has called at your door, report it to the Police immediately - dial 999 and tell us what happened. If you would like a crime prevention leaflet or a free crime prevention home survey please contact your local team (Acton Central residents can contact me direct)
