I am afraid that the problems associated with lack of employment and resultant need for help have been carefully built in to UK PLC for many years. Much of Acton was associated with unskilled manual jobs such as in laundries, many of which can now be mechanised. There was also a very large range of skilled manual jobs in engineering and manufacturing, many now exported elsewhere. You can buy cheap goods manufactured abroad as long as the quality is good enough for you and there are still people prepared to work for next to nothing somewhere. We have allowed our education system to become optional, with no compulsion to work and learn, or even try, rather than just mess around, so we have a generation often totally incompetent to compete in the world. You have never had it so good.
