Gypsy Corner Traffic Lights

The traffic lights are out on the major junction between Western Avenue and Wales Farm Road.  Looks like a vehicle took out a set on the A40.  One loan community support officer in attendance when I walked past.

When traffic lights stop working on busy roads, police should attend to keep the traffic moving. Or am I naive?

The old man drove that way this afternoon and said it was hair-raising. He had to use a bus as a human shield.

I thought that the traffic lights not working were at the Wales Farm Road / Leamington Park junction near the top of the hill, not the Horn Lane / Victoria Road junction which is called Gypsy (or Gipsy, I have seen it both ways) Corner. I used to live overlooking the Leamington Park junction and had to cross both the Western Avenue and Leamington Park at that point to get to school. There was no one way system, no restriction on turning, and not even a speed limit. There were two lanes of traffic plus a cycle lane each way on the A40, It was a blind junction from most directions, and we expected at least one serious accident per day, most often around Pub closing time.

Chris I too remember the accidents in Wales Farm Road (lived there for 30 yrs) and the A40/Lemington Park junction.  They used to speed down Wales Farm Road not realising the last bend as you reach the houses is a sharp turn left, when they did we have our fences, walls and the occasional tree knocked down - those were the days!!! Auto reach for 999!!

The problem was definitely at the top of Horn Lane.

The standard procedure if either set of traffic lights fails is to quickly close the junction and divert all traffic needing to cross the A40 on to the next junction, either Hanger Lane or East Acton, causing total chaos. I think they have been running normally all day today.
